"Is it able to perform a Manual Disaster Recovery?"

This issue has been solved. See solution.

I have to restore a server. What I got is the SDR-CD from 18/10/12 and a .dr File from 18/10/12.

There is the only one backup on the tape, which is from 22/11/12.

With this .dr File I cannot do a simplified disaster recovery, I tried it already.

So I want to know: Is it able to perform a Manual Disaster Recovery?

Server: HP ProLiant DL380 G7

OS: Windows Server 2008 SP2

Software: Backup Exec 2012 updated to the latest version

  • HP LTO4-Ultrium 1760 - tape drive
  • LTO-4 Ultrium RW Data Cartridge (C7974A) - tape

Thank you in advance for your answer

Sure.  It is just that manual recovery is more troublesome.  You have to do the things that SDR will do for your.  One thing to note is that you can only do a manual recovery on the same type of hardware.  A manuall recovery does not allow you do driver injection.  If you restore to a different hardware, then the final re-boot will probably fail due to missing/incompatible drivers.

WIth BE 2010 R3 and earlier there were 3 main DR options

1) IDR with Automatic Recovery (Boot off CD and it more or less does it all for you - this needs a .DR file)

2) IDR with customized/manual settings (Boot off CD and manually specify what to restore and where to restore it, this can use a .DR file but does not always require it)

3) Manual DR (install Operating System with same name in a Workgroup, install BE components and then do manual restore jobs over the top)

With BE 2012 option 2 (above) no longer exists so you only have

A) SDR with Automatic Recovery (Boot off DVD and it more or less does it all for you, this needs a .DR file for a local recovery but uses the catalogs from the SSP jobs on the media server for a remote recovery)

B) Manual DR (install Operating System with same name in a Workgroup, install BE components and then do manual restore jobs over the top)

Well, I am a bit disappointed that Backup Exec 2012 does not has this Option 2.

But the main thing is that I now know that.

Thanks for your help.
