This issue has been solved. See solution.

i have a potential new customer with a bespoke setup looking for a backup solution, he has

1 x OES2 server

2 x Netware 6.5 servers

and 24 x Suse Linux servers at 24 remote sites

he would like to back them all up with a single soluition. i have read the docs and would seem like backup exec supports all elements but i need to confirm this before selling him a solution

can anyone confirm ??

thanks

Hi there,

Your first point of call is to check the BE 2010 R3 Software Compatibility List to ensure that the versions of the various OS's are all supported. Check the link below:

http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=tech137682

Once done,  you can check the licensing guide on the link below. This will tell you what, and how many, licenses you require.

Windows is the only supported OS to act as a media server so you need ro arrange a server running a Windows OS (Server 2003 at a minimum; Server 2008 R2 if you can). The media server itself will be able to back up the Linux and NW servers (if their OS's are listed).

Thanks!

Hi Guys

Thanks for the responses, i probably wasn't clear enough in my post

He would be installing a new media server on a Windows box, so thats all fine.

the remote agents for all of his servers ( linux suse, etc ) seem to be listed but i normally deal with MS products so am out of my confort zone, so was after if anyone has had succesfully backed up these other products and what gotcha's i should be looking out for ?

with a linux remote agent for example, can i push out the remote agent like i would to a windows box etc etc

thanks guys

You need to manually install remote agents on the linux server, you cannot push out agent from the

BE console as you would do for Windows machine.

Make sure you checked the retiring soon and end of life sections located at the bottom of our compatibility lists as you might find that the NetWare 6.5 environment (for instance) will not be supported by the next version which might limit your future options.

In this case, NetBackup is a better platform than BackupExec.
