Backup Exec Quick Start - Windows 7 - Windows Server 2008 R2

This issue has been solved. See solution.

I have a development machine that normally runs Windows 7 Ultimate and uses Windows Virtual PC for test VMs.  Occassionally, I boot Windows Server 2008 R2 because I need to run an x64 VM and you can't do that under Windows Virtual PC.

I need a backup solution for the hosts (Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2) that run on the machines -- not for the test VMs.

Will Backup Exec 12.5 Quick Start work on Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2?  Is there some documentation for it?  I've searched the Symantec web site and there doesn't seem to be anything about -- at least that I can find.  Not even a feature list.  I am used to using Backup Exec 8.5 and would like to know what was cut out to make a "Quick Start" edition.

I saw elsewhere on the forum that it does not have any encryption support.  Does that mean it cannot read password protected tapes created with Backup Exec 8.5?

There is a hotfix available

There is a hotfix available to add support for Windows 2008 R2 with Backup Exec. Please note that this hotfix would not enable installation of Backup Exec software on the Windows 2008 R2 server. It is only for a remote agent. You will require to install hotfix on media server. Following url has a download link to this hotfix:
http://support.veritas.com/docs/334937

There will be no support for Windows 7 with current release of Backup Exec. Following document would give you more information on this:
http://support.veritas.com/docs/324303

I am not sure if the hotfix listed above would apply to quickstart edition, because there is very limited support available for quickstart edition of Backup Exec. Hence, you may give it a try for Windows 2008 R2.

Regarding encryption question, encryption and password protection are different things. Software encryption was introduced with Backup Exec 11d. Password protection is supported with quickstart edition, you may want to check the catalog job for that. A backward compatibility is available with Backup Exec 11 and next releases if you would like to restore from old tapes which are password protected.

Please mark it a solution, if this is useful.
Thanks

It wasn't the solution I was

It wasn't the solution I was hoping for but it was a solution and I have marked it as such.  It appears that Symantec does not have a backup product that will run on either Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2 nor does there appear to be any plans to provide one.

BTW, the email notice that I received (since I subsribed to the thread) did not have a link back to the thread.  This is the first time I have used these forums but I assume that is always the case here.  This is the first forum where a subscription notice did not include a link back to the thread.

For the record, Windows 7

For the record, Windows 7 Ultimate may not be supported from Backup Exec 12.5, but nevertheless i tried it and it works.

Did you have to do anything

Did you have to do anything special to get it to install -- i.e. add the code for the Windows 7 operating system to the .ini file or were you just able to run a clean install?

I guess I was not clear -- I

I guess I was not clear -- I wanted to install Backup Exec 12.5 Quick Start on the Windows 7 and WIndows Server 2008 R2 machines not the agent.
