Backup Exec Remote Agent stuck in "starting" state

This issue has been solved. See solution.

I am trying to deploy the Backup Exec Remote Agent (version 12) onto a Windows 2000 SP4 server. I haven't had any other problems doing this for dozens of other servers except this one. I've tried pushing the installation from the Backup Exec server as well as manually copying the installation folder and running setupaofo.cmd. In both cases, the setup attempts to try and start the Backup Exec Remote Agent for Windows Systems service. But in both cases, it doesn't work. The service gets stuck in the "starting" state. Rebooting the server did not help.

I've also tried uninstalling and reinstalling. Adn yes, the service is set to start using the Local System account. There is a beremote.exe process running in Task Manager but I am unable to communicate with the agent from Backup Exec.

I didn't have problems with an old Veritas 9.1 Agent before.

Can anyone assist?

BTW, I managed to get it to work.

In case the link doesn't work:

Go ahead and try going through these steps on the server(s) where the remote agent is stuck in a starting state.

There are two ways through which this can be resolved.
Kill the Beremote.exe from Task manager.
1 ) Make Microsoft Outlook as default mail client.
Restart the Remote agent service. If the service still goes into starting state, reboot the server.
2) Open the Windows Registry Editor by entering Regedt32.exe via Start | Run
Browse to \HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Clients\Mail
Rename PreFirstRun to PreFirstRunold

Restart the Remote agent service. If the service still goes into starting state, reboot the server.
