Backup Exec upgrade and migration

Created: 04 Nov 2013 | 4 comments

Hello,

I work for a medium sized hospital and we currently are running Backup Exec 12 on an older server that has an enourmous amount of jobs and settings in place. I just built a new server with quaddruple the resources of our current backup server. My new server is running Backup Exec 2010 R3. Is there anyway to migrate everything over to my new server without having to start from scratch? I really don't want to create all the settings and backup jobs again, because that will take me forever! If anyone needs any more details feel free to ask. Thanks so much!

Chaz.

Hello,

I generally use a combination of the following articles to perform a migration of Backup Exec Data and Catalogs folder from one server to the other:

How to use BEMIG to manually upgrade the Backup Exec database from a previous version
http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH50537

How to move Backup Exec from one system to another with the same or different computer names

Sidd,

Thank you for your response and for the helpful documentation. Will it matter that my old server is running server 03 R2 and the new server is running 08 R2? I don't have much experience with BackupExec and we do have a support agreement with Symantec, would you recommend me just contacting support to have them help me out? Or would they actually be able to walk me through it?

Thanks again,

Chaz.

Well, after reading through the articles I see this is impossible to do because of the two different OS's. I just need a way to import all the jobs/settings/catalogs into my new Backup Exec 2010 R3 server.

Old Server - Server 2003 R2 x86 w/ Backup Exec 12

New Server - Server 2008 R2 x64 w/ Backup Exec 2010 R3

Chaz,

As per http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH50537 we should avoid performing a migration if the .mdf and .ldf files are from an older version of Backup Exec installed on a different server i.e. the computer where Backup Exec is installed and the computer where it will be installed are running two different versions of the Windows Operating System.

However, we could still try upgrading Backup Exec on your old server to Backup Exec 2010 R3 and then perform a migration.
