Backup Exec v2010 2010 v13 R2896
I have an installation in which the program is not erasing the external USB hard drive data. I have the program set to overwrite and the media is set to keep the backups for only 1 hour. What am I missing?

Make sure the Media
Make sure the Media protection level is not set to Full , if it is set to full it will not overwrite any media and mostly it is set to partial .
You can check that by Going to Tools--options --media management
Most likely you have the Option to overwrite scratch media before overwriting recyclable media set and thats the reason why the old backup sets are not overwritten . You need to set the option to overwrite recyclable media before overwriting scratch media so that it overwrite the olad backup set instead of created new set of files .
Also make sure the backup job is using the same media set.
have a read of the following document

if it is set to full it will
if it is set to full it will not overwrite any media and mostly it is set to partial .
Not even close to being true
Full means respect the expiration data in a media header (mostly Tape media) regardless of what product was used to create the media
Partial means treat all "foreign" media (created on another system, not just another program) as scratch, but respect OPP and APP for media created by this installation
None means just that. Any media can be overwritten/appended to at any time.
You need to set the option to overwrite recyclable media before overwriting scratch media so that it overwrite the olad backup set instead of created new set of files .
Also make sure the backup job is using the same media set.
These are all valid points to consider
