In the VM, use a command prompt to issue

Vssadmin list writers

If any of the writers are not ready, then reboot the VM

Also take a look at this document

Hyper-v server's backups are configured, there is no backup Exec Agent has installed in VM

We have 5 hyper-V in cluster, each Hyper-V host have seperate backup policy, 4 hyper-v server's VM backups are running fine, only 1 hyper-v host with 5 VMs are getting fail with below error.

Hyper-v server has rebooted and cleaned up temp directry also,

FYI - Vssadmin list writers - will used this command - it is showing as system writer, WMi writer and IIS writer are failed,

V-79-57344-65233 - Snapshot Technology: Initialization failure on: "VRTSRV::\\xxxxxx\Hyper-V?HA?VM\xxxxxxx". Snapshot technology used: Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS).
Snapshot technology error (0xE000FED1): A failure occurred querying the Writer status. See the job log for details about the error.
Check the Windows Event Viewer for details.
Writer Name: Microsoft Hyper-V, Writer ID: {xxxxxDED-4F4B-8F17-FD23F8DDC3DE}, Last error: The VSS Writer failed, but the operation can be retried (0x800423f3), State: Failed during prepare snapshot operation (8).

1. What is the reason for not installing the remote agent in the VM's?

2. Did you reboot the problem VM's?

Hi pkh,

Just for clarification,

For Hyper-v snapshot backup with Backup Exec, we need to install Backup exec agent only in Hyper-v server and take taking snapshot backup for VMs under the hyper-v host, so snapshot will store in hyper-v server, so we rebooted hyper-v host

please correct me, if Iam wrong..

If you are doing GRT backup, especially for applications or databases, then you need to have the remote agent in the VM.  The remote agent will then call of a snapshot of the VM.
