Backup to external (usb) HD's stopped working

Created: 10 Apr 2014 | 4 comments

We are using Backup Exec 2012 to save our critical data every night to 3 usb-hd's, one for the wednesday, one for the thursday and one for the friday. At this moment we are experiencing problems changing the external usb-HD's.

The backup software isn't aware that the hd to backup to has changed however in the server the new hd is being recognized.

In several formus I have read that this is a problem solved in versie 2012 R2 but we use the 2012 version.

Is there anyone who can help me?

Are these USB drives connected to the media server? Otherwise, there is no way for BE to know their status

Hi blue002,

what type of USB drives are these?  Are they listed in the Backup Exec 2012 HCL? http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?pag...

also make sure you have all the Live Updates installed

These are WD Passport 1Tb drives USB3.0; the service pack is SP2, all updates are installed so it should be up to date; the drives are connected to a HP Proliant ML350p Gen8 running SBS2011.

Is BE loaded on this machine or is BE loading in a VM or another machine?

Make sure that you have not assign a single drive letter to these USB drives.  You should let the OS assign the drive letter.

BE tracks the disks by their diskids.  Make sure that all of your disks have different diskids.  See my blog below

Also, test the functionality of your disks using this utility
