Hi all,

I am new to backup world and new to backup exec 2012 as well. Therefore i hope that i can get usefull advices from all of you.

Note : I am having 3 ESXi host + vcenter + 1 backup exec 2012 on physical sever.

Backup Retention:

+ 1 Month backup retention
+ duplicate full backup at the end of each month to tape for MONTHLY BACKUP ( keep for 1 year)

Can you advise on my backup schedule below ?

+ Backup Disk to Disk to Disk ( Disk - to - DAS - to - NAS ) everyday. Then duplicate full backup at the end of each Monthy to Tape LT05

Backup schedule
Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursady Friday
Incremental Incremental Incremental Incremental Incremental
Incremental Incremental Incremental Incremental Incremental
Incremental Incremental Incremental Incremental Incremental
Incremental Incremental Incremental Incremental Fullbackup

License

I am having license of Backup exec 2012 + 2 agent for app/database + 1 agent for Vmware and my environment is 100% virtuliazation. My questions are :

  1. should i just buy 1 deduplication agent for my backup exec 2012 server to reduce space in DAS(SAS disk) and NAS (SATA disk) storage ?
  2. Should i buy 1 Vmware agent for 1 ESXi host ? for example i have 3 ESXi host + 1 vcenter, should i buy 3 Vmware agent ?

Thank you all very much.

Schedule - If you just do one full backup a month, when you do a restore, you potentially need to restore the full backup + 29 incremental backups.  This is when you need to restore towards the end of the month.  Do more frequent full backups, like weekly.  You can still only duplicate 1 of the weekly full backups to tape per month.

Licence - You need 1 AVVI licence per host.  You only need 1 dedup licence per media server.

Hi,

thanks for your answer. There is one thing that i am not sure i understand that what  "duplicate job" really mean, is it just a "copy file job" to copy BKF file to anothe storage like second disk or Tape ? If yes, then what do i have to do to restore data from one of my monthly tape ?

Thanks

Duplicating a backup set goes beyond mere copying.  The catalog is also updated so that the second copy can be used.  In fact, you are not supposed to just copy the .bkf files if you want to make other copies.  See this document

Reasons why copying backup to disk data files is NOT recommended.

When you do a restore, you would be presented with an option to choose which copy of the backup you want to use.  You can then choose either the tape or disk copy.
