Backup size for virtual machine
Updated: 25 May 2010 | 2 comments
I'm using the trial version of BE 12.5, installed on Windows 2008 with Hyper-V, to test backing up a child VM running SBS 2008. The child vhd file is a fixed size at 300Gb but currently only using 60 Gb. The backup size was over 300 Gb. My question is, why is the backup size related to the vhd size and not to the size that is being used for data?

In this case, it would appear
In this case, it would appear that Backup Exec 12.5 is using the agent, which is backing up the flat files...hence the full size being used.
I would have assumed it wouldn't have backed up white space (space not being used).
If you find this is a solution, please mark it as such.
Backup size for virtual machine
Hello Court,
To answer your question when using the if you are backing up the Hyper-V VHD files using the MSVA (microsoft virtual agent) it will backup the entire VHD and not only 60 gb, that is possible with VMware cause it uses VCB (Vmware consolidated backup) in order to compress it and snap it, however no such technology available with MS, hence it backs up complete VHD and when talking abt the restore it will mount this VHD and than give you the granular veiw in order to restore the files and folders
