Backup Speed

Created: 01 Aug 2013 | 16 comments

Hello

I am working with symantec backup exec 2012 and I have a job that backups exchange 2007 to a nas Synolgy DS1512+ directly connected to one of the server network card.

The first 10 minutes the speed is increasing up to about 1100MB/min but then it decreasing about 10MB/min each 4 seconds.

As you can see on the screenshoot the monitor on the synology shows that the speed is nearly allways arround few KB/s

Thanks for your help

Hi,

You can check your network speed by copying a couple of GB between the media server and NAS to see if the speed is fast enough.

I've also checked the specs on that model and it is capable of iSCSI. If you have enough disk space, carve out an iSCSI LUN and present to your media server. Create a new B2D on that, and redirect the backups to this and see if you get the same issue.

If not, then seriously consider iSCSI...I've used it on Iomega NAS's and it works very well.

Thanks!

Also have you tested any other backups to thatnas Synolgy DS1512??

Just wanted to isolate if the issue is happening with only Exchange backups or with all the backups.

Thanks,

Hope this piece of Information Helps you... and if it does then mark this response as Solution....!!!

Hello,

I tried to copy 65gb and the speed stays arround 75MB/s on the nas monitoring tool. It means that the synology should be ok

I tried to add a new job to backup files and it's not good. It happens that the nas become offline some times however I can still browse it by windows explorer.

J'ai essayé avec un iSCSI la vitesse dans backup exec est à 380MB/min mais sur le nas je vois constament de pics et après 15 minutes le disque est considéré comme offline et n'est plus mappé dans windows.

Thanks for your help

Can you try enable jumbo frames on the server/NAS? Are the NICs on the servers and NAS set to the fastest speed possible? ie. 1GB FULL?

In addition to craig....Try running the same job to local disk and see if the issue reoccurs I.e.starts with good speed and slowly decreases
..if it happens on local disk than ilupdate backup exec to latest patch and make sure no antivirus is scanning files at that time....eg. symantec endpoint protection option scan when a file is backed up

Go for the B2D test tool

Information regarding the Backup Exec Backup to Disk Test Tool - B2Dtest.exe
http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH69107

Also what is the size configured for the "Maximum size for backup-to-disk files" in the BE Network storage properties?

If its set on too large like 100 - 200 GB it can cause issues as well.

What are the problems?

Hello,

After activating jumbo frames the speed stil drops and backup exec says disk offline but it's still mounted in windows.

Backup Exec is up to date according to the software updater.

The nic ar 1GB Full

When I try to backup to a local drive the speed stays arround 100 MB/Min

I tested with B2Dtest.exe and all tests are successful

Mmm...couple of things to try do:

1. Plug the NAS into another switch port and see if this fixes things (also check the current switch port for any sort of dropped packets etc or errors);

2. Check the NAS for any errors...

Thanks!

The nas is directly connected to the server. It was connected to a switch before but it was the same.

The logs on the nas are normal.

...if you have some disk space locally on the server, create a B2D there and run a backup to that. See if you get comparable speeds. If you do, then the issue isn't the NAS.

Thanks!

OK...next thing to check is your source servers...are they all fully configured to the fastest speeds on the NICs? Does this slow-down happen on a specific server? If so, run a file copy between that server/media server and see what you get.

I take it that BE 2012 is fully patched? And has this been a problem for a while, or is it something new?

Thanks!

Hello,

I tried to copy big files on the nas through windows explorer and it worked great.

I only tried now to use a nas. We used backup to disk on a local disk until now sucessfully but we are missing space now.

Backup Exec seems to be up to date. See attachments
