backup taking way too long

I noticed that in the last week, backups are taking a lot longer then they did a week ago.

We are using Ver 10.1 Rev 5629.
Supermicro server
Windows enterprise 2003 sp1
4 Xeon 2.66Ghz CPU's
4 Gig of memory
backup to 5 232 gig sata drives.

we do a full backup on one drive one night and then diff for 6 days on another drive.
our full backups till now at about 110 - 120 gig and would take about 10 to 12 hours with verify
our diff backups till now at about 30 - 36 gig and would take about 3 to 3.5 hours with verify.

The last full, that just finished right now, is 126 gig and took a little over 19 hours.
last weeks diff's were about 36 gig each day and took about 9 hours. but the full with those diff's, only took 12 hours with 123 gig.
So as you can see the full ran ok for last week, but the diff's for that full took 3 times as long as previous weeks.

what could it be that all of sudden, the backups are taking so long.
this doesn't make any sense, I have not made any changes, we use the same hard drives week in and week out, we only swap the drives at end of every other backup.

any help or suggestions greatly appreciated

try to compare your previous job result and review each selected data's. From there you  can check the throughput or speed of the selected data.

-try also run database check by going to beutilty, also if you include the exchange database try to defrag the database.

hope this will help

I have a customer with the same problem.  Their system is a single HP Proliant ML 350 G4p running SBS2003 SP2.  Backup Exec 10d (5629) only backs up the local drive to an external Sony AIT3 drive.  The system has been in place for almost a year, and up until a week ago the system backed up at 850 MB/min.  No changes have been made to the backup configuration and it now runs (without errors) at the rate of 130 MB/min.

I am very suspicious that this be related to Windows 2003 SP2 that was installed at around that time.

Are the servers on the same LAN?  Or are they on a WAN or a mix of LAN and WAN?

What is the data throughput reported in the job history/log?

Most servers (4) in same rack. (local)that data is being backed up.
throughput varies:
Throughput rate: 14.8 MB/min
to
Throughput rate: 1932 MB/min

have one server that is coming off wireless across the street. (been doing this for about 5 months) with no issues
the wan server stats:
Backed up 373 files in 153 directories.
Processed 827456000 bytes in  5 minutes and  34 seconds.
Throughput rate: 142 MB/min

OK, now the kicker, I have noticed that even thou the backups are scheduled to start at 8 PM, some didn't start till about 2AM.
I have checked and double checked the schedules and the time on the application and server and also the NTP server, they all match.
Looking at more current jobs they are starting at 8PM like they should, where the media in mounted.
Job server: DC3-DTLA
Job name: Full-1-Full-1-Backup Template 0050
Job started: Monday, April 16, 2007 at 8:00:03 PM
Job type: Backup
Job Log: BEX_DC3-DTLA_01190.xml
Drive and media mount requested: 4/17/2007 1:56:30 AM

I'm experiencing the exact same thing. No changes to the server or Backup Exec installation. Only changes are (according to the customer who's having the problem) the Wiindows Updates you can see below.

Any help would be much appreciated :)
