Backup Tape Security

This may be a bit off topic, I was wondering how difficult it would be to use a tape backup created in Veritas Backup Exec offsite on another computer and what it would involve to retrieve the data off it.

An ex employee has taken one of our clients backup tapes and may have retrieved email data from it, I was wondering how secure Veritas Backup Exec was, if the data was encrypted and how easy it would be to recover emails from a Microsoft Exchange account

many thanks for your help in advance

If you don't use the password option, it's simply a case of installing BE on a machine (provided you have the relevant tape drive available), then restoring data, at least as far as a filesystem is concerned. Exchange is a little trickier, but not by much.
If the password protection option was set, then Symantec will tell you that the data can't be restored. As it's not encrypted, there would probably be (non-trivial) ways around it.

Backup Exec 11d can encrypt data backed up to tape.
