Backup VM's without grt - Access Denied

Hi all,

I have a Backup Exec 2012 Environment for backups. The most servers are VM's running on VMware 4.1 and some of the servers are Aplliances running some sort of Linux type OS. These Appliances do not have VMware tools or any add-ons and can not be backupped with GRT enables. This is no problem because i only need the complete VMDK's.

The problem however is that when i Backup these appliances with GRT enabled i Can backup the vmdk's but with the expected Completed with exceptions results.. When I change the properties of this job and Turn of GRT backups. The job Fails with an access denied. Note that the only difference is the turned-off GRT function. The credentials and all aother settings are the same.

The Mediaserver is a Windows 2008R2 server fully patched until the latest hotfixes. The BE version is BE 2012 with all hotfixes availlable. Backup are made with SAN Transport, The SAN enviroment is an iSCSI Equallogic group.

I tried to find a solution for this but without sucses. Somebody any suggestions?

Craig,

I know that grt is not supported with these appliances. Thats the reason I want to backup these appliances without grt.

The appears at the moment that I deselect grt. The job then fails with an access denied. When I select the grt option the job runs without access denied errors.

All other selectiosn and option are not changed

As suggested, you should contact the vendors of these appliances to see whether you can install VMTools in these machines.

I'm Sorry i ddin't post a reaction before I spend a whol lot of time cleaning up Backup Exec 2012 mess.

I dont want to use RALUS of VMware tools within the appliances. I want to make a backup of Virtual images using the VMware option from backup Exec 2012.

This is what happened:

Backup of Virtual images with .grt option active, completed with exceptions (the obvious exception that there is no support for .grt)

Backup of Virtual imags without .grt option active, Job failed with the access denied error.

This is ONLY happening with the Linux images or applicance (basically also linux) all other settings are the same and backup of VMimages with windows are running Fine (with and without .grt).
