Backupexec 2010 Move Functionality

Created: 26 Sep 2010 | 5 comments

Quick Question: Does backupexec 2010 allow me to move files from a drive local to the media server to tape?

I have a seperate backup process (redgate) that copies sql data nightly to a drive on my backup server.  What I'm trying to achieve is that when I backup these files daily to tape the files are removed from my local drive so that, that space is made available for my next sql backup.  Thank you in advance for your help.

I guess you could do an archive backup job that backs up a file(s) then deletes it.

Alternatively, a post script batch file that deletes the file when the backup is done.  This is setup within the job properties.

There is an online portal, save yourself the long hold times. Create ticket online, then call in with ticket # in hand :-) "We backup data to restore, we don't backup data just to back it up."

Create a backup-to-disk folder on your media server and backup up the files to that backup-to-disk folder using a backup job.

Then create a archive backup job,  to backup the backup-to-disk folder to tape.

Archive backup method is designed for migrating data from disk to storage media and
should not be incorporated in a regular backup schedule.

Kiran: the user is using BE to backup data that RedGate backs up first...

David: what you can consider is checking to see what time the RedGate backup finishes, add a bit of overhead in terms of time (say 30 minutes to an hour for future DB growth), and then configure a job in BE to back up that data to tape.

The other alternative is to get hold of the SQL agent for BE, create a job to back up your SQL data to disk first, and then create a duplicate job to send that information to tape.
