BackupExec 2012, long idle time during start and finish of job

Created: 12 Feb 2014 | 4 comments

When running a backup job, it seem that it takes very long time before the backup job starts, and also after the selected data har been processed.

It takes long time before job starts, and it seems as "nothing" happends, e.g when looking at service BEremote on backed up server it's no CPU load. Then when data transfer start it seems to run normal. But then again, when data amount is finished copy it taked even longer before job is set as finished and released from job queue.

Any suggestions  ?

Without a little more information I’d say this could depend on many factors including what is being backed up, GRT backups, the device that’s being backed up to, the network, and any other instances that may be occurring at the same time. Is this an issue during scheduled backup jobs or do you also see the behavior when manually running a job outside of its scheduled window?

I would advise confirming you are fully patched by running live update and updating any remote agents that may be needed. You could also try running a chkdisk to ensure there are no errors returned. Here is a link to the best practice methods for Backup Exec 2012 that may help you: http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH126401

Thanks for the link, however I see only information of BE2010 there, I'm running 2012

Maybe this one is better for me : http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=HOWTO74626

Checkdisk says "no error", the behaviour is both at schedule and when doing "Run now" on a scheduled job. However things are much worse on schedule.

I apologize on the link for 2010 best practices, and looks like you found the correct document. You could check the event viewer for application and system both, for anything that may be happening prior to the job starting. And always make sure you are fully updated by running live update. There was a hotfix released for BE 2012 a few weeks ago.

Run LiveUpdate earlier today, after that a small change in behaviour that Backup job starts rather quickly, but then halt after some Gb's of the job are processed. Then only Status:Loading Media and only thing that seems to happend in Backup server is that pvlsrv.exe is using CPU time. All other BE services seems to be doing nothing
