Backups suddenly running slow

Created: 04 Apr 2013 | 3 comments

Hi,

I have a client who uses Backup Exec 2010 R3. Their backups have been running fine for months however over the last couple of weeks their weekly full backup is taking forever to complete. The backup starts at 8pm Friday and is still running Monday morning when the client changes the tapes. It seems to backup all data and gets to the Verify portion so at least the data is being backed up (I hope).

Going through the job logs I can see that Exchange, System State, and Shadow Copy Components aren't taking too long, they look about right. However the D drive on the data server is taking about 48 hours to complete. The total data to be backed up is a bit over 700GB to an LTO 4 Tape. I'm ata loss as to why this has started happening.

I tried splitting the backup up to a job for Exchange and a job for data but that doesn't seem to have helped.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Cheers

1) If there are a lot of small files on the D: drive then it will be slow.  Backing up lots of small files is a lot slower than backing up a couple of big files.  Try defraging the disk, it may help.

2) If the job is an incremental/differential job, then it will be slower than a full backup job.  Try using the modified time method which may be faster than the archive bit method.

Hi pkh,

I've started a defrag of the drive. The job is a full backup, the differentials are running fine. It's quite annoying that it just suddenly started taking like 50 hours when before it might take 17 or so

Make sure that there are no housekeeping jobs running against the disk at the time of the backup, e.g. AV scan.  Check that there are also no other jobs accessing the disk during the backup.
