Barcode 7.1 not installing - still thinks it has 7.0 installed

  • 1.  Barcode 7.1 not installing - still thinks it has 7.0 installed

    Posted Nov 14, 2011 04:02 PM

I can navigate to the Home > service and asset management> Barcode

ONce their all sub windows have big red x's

I did find one mention of this in http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH161413

    did the fix

    9) On this machine, via command line go “Program Files\Altiris\Notification Server\Bin”
    10) Using command line run “aexconfig /configure “Path to Barcode.config”. Which is under
    \Program Files\Altiris\Barcode\Config\Barcode.config
This will configure the Barcode Solution and user will be able to access the Barcode Solution pages.

    restarted IIS

    but nothing happens

their is nothing in the IIS 7 web site list for Barcode

Their is a directory at C:\Program Files\Altiris\Barcode\config when I open web.config at thsi location I see version 7.0 in the file.

    so it looks like something

I tried uninstalling Barcode and reinstalling it using SIM - including all the horfixes. I verified that barcode 7.1was in the download list

and I can see altiris_barcode_7._1_sp1 in the download files for SIM . I even ran a repair on Barcode using that file - nothing

the only thing that the suport rep had me do this morning was redo all the steps in tech 161413- so refered to level 2 suport.

anyother ideas on why 7.0 barcode is not getting upgraded?

Are you using IE7 or IE8 with Java installed?  Red X's are usually Java whenever I've seen them.

7.0 will appear in the config file, that's normal.

What do you see in IIS, for example Default Web Site > Altiris > Barcode? Is this present?

Are any errors posted to the Altiris Log Viewer if you manually run the barcode installation .msi from the SIM install file directory?

  • 5.  RE: Barcode 7.1 not installing - still thinks it has 7.0 installed

    Posted Nov 15, 2011 07:32 PM

    Altiris support is usless !!!

The core issue is that Barcode 7.1 is not moving from the MSI installs files C:\Program Files\Altiris\Symantec Installation Manager\Installs\Altiris to the install directory. So when we are running the aexconfig / configure on C:\Program Files\Altiris\Barcode\Config we are running the configure file on version 7.0

Noting is in IIS - which is part of the problem - somehow the barcode update MSI 7.0 to 7.1 MSI is either corrupted or not seeing what it needs to see

I can run a repair on that file and nothing happens - its says that install was successful - the config file stays at 7.0 not 7.1

no files in log files - I ran repair

ran repair on barcode documentation and it says 7.1.1 now along with a successful install message in logs

Description: AeXConfig being run with command line:  /configure C:\Program Files\Altiris\BarcodeDocumentation\Config\BarcodeDocumentation.config

verified that my id is in in the administrators group

troubleshooting steps - un-install barcode using MSI from SIM file folder - it still left some partial files in the directory

rerun download of Asset Management 7.1 sp1

what I see when I rerun the SIM - somehow it is thinking that AM is not installed

    Altiris IT Management Suite 7.1 SP1b (7.1.21)
    Altiris Asset Management Suite 7.1 SP1 (7.1.1)
Altiris CMDB Solution (7.1.1227) (already installed)
    Altiris Asset Management Solution (7.1.1216)

The config file says 7.0, and that's normal.  It's no different than if you were to see version 1.4.056.  The real version is specified in the config file as @USE_MSI_PRODUCT_VERSION which is pulled from the .msi.  What issue are you seeing in the environment that you are trying to fix?  What's not working?  Because your install was successful.

  • 8.  RE: Barcode 7.1 not installing - still thinks it has 7.0 installed

    Posted Nov 16, 2011 02:47 PM

barcode is inoperable is the simple answer-- see my first post

the install was not sucessful as nothing was installed in the IIS directory that says barcode

also nothing is in the logs saying the install was successful - usually you can watch in the logs the install progress along with a successful install message

if you have Barcode 7.1 installed I would love to see some screen shots of file versions along with the directory file dates.

Barcode 7.0 has never been installed on this server. I did a fresh install of SMP on a fresh W2K8 server when I did this install. That is actually one of the stranger things. I did reuse the CMDB from my previous production 7.0 install. So I am thinking that something in database is messed up related to the config file settings

I removed Barcode using SIM and then reinstalled it

I also tried using the MSI for Barcode to remove the product then rerun the install of Asset Management from SIM to reinstall Barcode 7.1

from the tech article - basically something in the barcode 7.0 to 7.1 upgrade MSI is thinking that the product is loaded so it does not install.

    Cause

While doing the upgrade from Barcode Solution 7.0 MR4 to Barcode Solution 7.1 SP1 the Symantec Installation fails to load the Barcode Product and doesn't run the Barcode Configuration. In short Symantec Installation Manager fails to configure Barcode Solution.

when I do item browse on this item it shows version 7.1.1.6851 in item in the interfaces

when I look at classes it still shows 7.0.1050 in the class assembly

for MSI is shows version 7.0.1070 so possibly the config file is telling it to call the wrong MSI version

at least that is what it is looking like right now - so possible when did removal of barcode it only did local uninstall and did not touch the guids in the database .

How do you have Barcode 7.0 if the KB recommends rebuilding your NS and migrating the database?  It essentially indicates you need to rebuild.  Have you done that yet?  I admit it's drastic, but it seems to be what they've had to advise.

  • 14.  RE: Barcode 7.1 not installing - still thinks it has 7.0 installed

no I have not rebuilt my NS - that is not a step that was reccommended by the tech rep when we walked through the troubleshooting.

Rebuilding my NS is very drastic and I feel an very unacceptable method to fix this issue. Everything works except for this issue, I really dont want to blow 6-20 hours to fix a out of the box installer issue cause by Symantec.

having said that,  I am going to build a whole new virtual sever later today or tomorrow. Take my install files  and install everything to see if I can get Barcode to install cleanly.

bacode works on my new test server with a fresh install of SMP 7.1 and a fresh DB. So I know it is not a OOB install issue with the application.

had call with Doug Level 3 support from Barcode team

    Verifed Barcode not installed.

Reran SIM for Barcode by clicking show Suites as it was not installed with Asset Solution.

Reran Barcode solution install using SIM

Barcode is now under c:\Program FIles\Altiris with bin and config folders showing

Verified barcode is showing red x's in console and not running

Also verifed using the following SQL query that 7.0 is still in some of the barcode version in database

    SELECT i.Guid, i.Name, i.Description, i.Attributes, c.Guid AS 'ClassGuid', c.Type, c.Assembly, vp.Name AS 'Solution'     FROM vItem i      JOIN Class c ON c.Guid = i.ClassGuid    JOIN vProduct vp ON vp.Guid = i.ProductGuid    WHERE vp.Name LIKE '%Barcode%'     order by Assembly asc

Next - redo steps from KB to do aexconfig

open CMD windows, CD to c:\Program FIles\Altiris\Notification Server\Bin, and then type in patch to Barcode.config

    he saw me type in

    c:\Program FIles\Altiris\Notification Server\Bin> aexconfig /configure C:\Program Files\Altiris\Barcode\Config\barcode.config

he said well he has seen it where it would not run if it didnt have qoutes around path. Added qoutes around Path

    c:\Program FIles\Altiris\Notification Server\Bin> aexconfig /configure "C:\Program Files\Altiris\Barcode\Config\barcode.config"

    and hit return

now something is running and I am seeing activitiy in the logs I did not have before! Including the normal install components messages that you see in the logs

It walks through everything and installs correctly! IIS is now populated, all versions in previous query show as 7.1 instead of lingering 7.0

Plus the Barcode portal is now populated and I am able to add a new synchronization profile.

Tech support says that they will update KB to show that qoutes should be put around the path

happy it works frustrated that it was a very easy issue in the end.

Research on qoutes and Windows 7 or Server 2008 needs qoutes around file names in CMD
