We are looking into purchasing barcode scanners from Symbol (Motorola) that use RFID technology and was wondering if there are any known issues using the MC3090Z instead of the more expensive MC9090Z?

Symantec has researched the following elements of the MC3090-Z device:

    1. Performance
    2. Memory
    3. Operating System
    4. Features
    5. Storage
    6. Availability

Both the performance, features, and memory of the MC3090-Z is comparable with a business grade device, such as MC5590. The MC3090-Z has a higher resolution than a MC5590 but lacks any SD Support. The research indicates that the MC3090-Z has been superseded with the MC3190 which boasts faster performance, more memory and includes a 2D Image Scanner as where the MC3090-Z only supports 1D scanners. The availability of the MC3090-Z would be limited as this has been superseded by the MC3190.

The differences between the two models are as follows:

      MC3090 MC3190
    Memory 128MB 512MB
    CPU 520 Mhz 624 Mhz
Scanner 1D Scanner Only 1D Laser and 2D Image Scanners
    Screen Resolution 320 x 320 320 x 320

After reviewing the specifications, some of the items were found that may present a compatibility issue:

    • Device has an intermediate resolution screen so fonts may scale incorrectly in the Barcode interface.
    • Driver support has not been tested for the 1D scanner that ships with the device, though Barcoder 7.1 and 7.1 SP1 are shipping with the latest Motorola / Symbol drivers.
    • No support for SD cards.

I have the MC319Z and it works super good.  Just one thing I haven't been able to work out is the RFID - it works in the demo app supplied by Motorola, but the Symantec Barcode doesn't pick anything up, even though it says the RFID scanner is ready.
