BE 11d SP2 Slowed Backup Performance

Earlier this week, I upgraded my 11d 7170 Media Servers to SP2 and since this upgrade, I've noticed a tremendous performance hit to my file level backups and my Exchange 2003 SP2 GRT backups.  The backup time doubled.  The only thing that changed was the installation of 11d SP2.  I'm certain of this.

Prior to the upgrade, I was running 11d 7170 w/ SP1 and all hotfixes.  I'm not using any brick level backups, but I do have the "restore individual messages" selected with my GRT backups.  I did also push the new remote agents to my Exchange 2003 w/SP2 server and rebooted all servers.  My file level backups are in a completely seperate job and I do use the open file option with Microsoft VSS as the open file agent type because all of my servers are Windows 2003.  My hard drives are also not fragmented.  I'm using a Dell LTO3 tape drive with latest firmware.

Any suggestions to get my pre-SP2 performance back would be appreciated.  It appears that Symantec may have reduced the performance to "resolve" some other BE 11d issues.

I've noticed the same thing since the SP2 update.

I have also upgraded three sites to SP2 the last few weeks; however, I noticed no appreciable difference in performance.  The full Exchange backup here at my local site this weekend was about 45 minutes longer than last week (4 hours to back up an entire 650GB Exchange org), but that is acceptable and can be blamed on other network or Exchange I/O going on during the backup window.

The duplication job that followed that only took 3 hours.  I am still running backups to tape, then dup-2-disk, because the other way round did not work before; I was at SP1 up to HF14.  I hadn't upgraded this site before now because my two other remote sites had even more problems with the later hotfixes.

Of my three sites, the SP2 upgrade seems to have solved all the problems in two.  The third, though, is now having new problems - the BE RPC service crashes at the end of every job.  The only major difference is that site is running 64-bit Windows and BE on the media server.

This weekend I plan to reconfigure the Exchange backup policy here to do a B2D then dup to tape.  We'll see how that goes.
