BE 12 UI hangs at "Connecting to Media Server"

This issue has been solved. See solution.
I have BE 12.0 running on Win2003 SP2 x64 (single server, no agents). It's been working fine for months.
But today I found the UI not responding and I had to End Task. When I tried to re-run the UI it hung at "Connecting to Media Server", and I had to End Task again.
I've stopped and restarted the BE services but that doesn't help. I've checked the DB consistency in BEUtility and it shows no problems.
What next?

Update: An after-hours server restart solved the problem. But what caused the restart to be required??
