BE 12.5 tape backups always fail with error 0xe00084ed (hardware failure)
I have an HP Ultirum 1840 drive that has been working fine for months. I am running BE 12.5 with all of the latest patches as of today. I recently added a SAS controller to the server to test out a new Ultrium 3000 drive (the 1840 is SCSI). The Ultirum 3000 drive seemed to work fine and was removed to install it in the server it was bought for. At the time I added the Ultrium 3000, I noticed that there was new firmware for teh 1840 and I installed it then. Now every backup fails after an hour or so with the same error. I cleaned the heads a few times and tried a brand new tape. I also read the KB article about deleting the tape drive from the BE 12.5 list and running the TAPEINST.EXE program. This did not appear to help matters any.
I ran the HP tape tools assessment tool and it said there were problems that could be due to the test tape? What could be the problem?

The new firmware might have
The new firmware might have broke something. After upgrade have you looked in the device manager, does it show the drive using the symantec drivers or HP now. Also is it a stand alone drive or robotic library.
If it is a stand alone drive then please try to use the ntbackup to see if it works.
Reinstall the latest Symantec
Reinstall the latest Symantec drivers and reboot the server and the robotic library (i.e shut down both -bring up Robotic library wait for it goet intialize and then bring up the server)
Check if any error related in the event log
