Be 2010 need to backup old server

Created: 28 Jan 2011 | 17 comments

we have been using symantec 2010 for a while.  I have this server windows 2000 server on it, it is not on our domain, it is being used as a webserver currently.  some contents on the C drive need to be backed up on it.  our network is on a 10.10.xxx.xxx network and this server is on a 209.239.229.xxx public network.  when i make a new backup and do a user defined selection of the C$ drive i can not access it, it prompts for an account but never connects just times out. the account is a local administrator account the server in question.

Hi there,

In order to make this work, you'd need the following:

1. Local admin account created on the workgroup server (you have this...)

2. BE 2010 RAWS agent installed, either via a push-install or a local installation on that workgroup server. If you do a local installation, you'd manually point it to the media server as its publishing server.

3. On your media server, create a new user account in the following way: WORKGROUP_NAME\new_account + password. No need to make it the default account (your normal jobs will fail) or a restricted account (it will prompt for the password all the time).

4. Go to your selection list and then to User-defined Selection. Enter in the IP address of that server.

5. Expand it and it will prompt for a username/password. Select the username you created on the media server.

Also just make sure there are no firewalls between the RAWS agent and the media server, and if there are, you can open the necessary ports to enable comms.

Thanks!

In addition to what Craig has listed

It would make things a lot easier if you put dual NICs in your WEB server.  One on the public network and one on your internal network

And the account you use to connect to the WEB server (point 2) needs to be a local admin on the WEB server

well i copied over the raws32 folder to the windows 2000 server and tried to run the setup, exe, it comes up with an error. also some other info on the windows 2000 server box, this was part of an old domain controller and was never taken off it properly.  i can not put it on a workgroup.

CraigV's picture

Aha...when you said it wasn't on the domain I thought it was in a workgroup, not in its own domain.

If you cannot remove it from the old domain and put it into a workgroup, or add it to your current domain, or create a trust between them, it is still doable.

All you'd need to do is create a user account on that old server's domain and give it domain admin rights. On your media server, you can then add in the service account from that domain as: DOmain\account + password.

What error do you get? Does the push install not work?

Win2K is on the SCL for a RAWS installation, so you're fine on that end.

Do you have BE 12.5? What happens if you try installing the 12.5 RAWS agent? Same error? The 12.5 RAWS agent should communicate back to the media server, and if it installs successfully, you can then try the upgrade (either locally/via a push-install).
