BE 2012 not deleting content off of external USB hard drives

Created: 30 Mar 2013 • Updated: 19 Jun 2013 | 2 comments
This issue has been solved. See solution.

The issue is that the USB hard drives are filling up and not deleting the older data on the drives.

Our configuration

Backing up 6 vmware servers

Backup Exec v2012 (v14/rev1798)

We have 10x 1TB backup drives (two sets for two weeks)

Each job is configured the same but different times

Differential backup Mon-Thurs

Full backup Friday/Saturday

In each of the Backup properties, we have the job kept for 5 days

We have one Storage device pool and all 10 of the drives are in that pool

BE 2012 default settings

Storage

Media overwrite set to None

Media overwrite options - Overwrite recyclable media

Disk devices / Limit BE to read-only...30days

Something is not set right but I'm not sure what?

For BE 2012, disk storage is managed by DLM.  Hence the rules for deleting backup sets are a bit complicated.  See this blog for further details,

However, there is a bug in DLM which does not delete backup sets on rotating disks.  See this document
