BE 2012 producing very large incremental backups after upgrading from 2010

Created: 23 Dec 2013 • Updated: 08 Jan 2014 | 6 comments
This issue has been solved. See solution.
I upgraded BE from 2010 to 2012 last week.  I've noticed that my backup-to-disk folders are getting full rapidly.

Looking through the job histories, it shows that the incremental backups are very large (the same size as full backups), even over the weekend when there are no users in.

The jobs are from policies automatically upgraded from 2010.  They are backing up DFSR replicated folders (Shadow?Copy?Components)

Why are my incremental backups the same size as full backups?

What do I need to change?

Thanks.

Are you using the ADBO option ? Is this a CAS MMS setup ?

EDIT :

Also ensure SP3 is installed http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH203648 ( This issue seems different but ensure BE is updated till SP3)

If you are backing up either the shadow copy component or the system state, then even if you specify incremental, it will be a full backup.

Could you try to put the existing jobs for one of your main server on hold and recreate the policy (Full/Incremental) in BE 2012. This might help in case there is an issue with the selection list.

Also, re-check the retention period on the jobs as BE 2012 no longer uses Media sets for B2D and has changed to a new system DLM.

Apologies for taking long to respond - I was on holiday over Christmas.

@Gurvinder Rait:-
I'm not using ADBO. The server is backing up files stored on the same server (via Shadow Copy components \ User Data \ Distributed File System Replication \ Dfsr Replicated Folders).

I have SP3 installed.

@pkh:-
I suspect this may be the issue. Under BE2010, I had to backup DFSR replicated folder with full + incrementals. Is this no longer the case for BE2012? Does this mean that BE could do incremental backups on DFSR replicated folders, but BE2012 cannot? Should I backup these folders as local folders?

@Jaydeep S:-
As you suggested, I've put the old jobs on hold and recreated new jobs. I'll monitor over the next few days.

Thanks everyone.

Shadows Copy Components have always been backed up as full backups.  There is no change.

You cannot backup DSFR folders by selecting them.  They will end up as empty folders in the backup sets.

Jaydeep was correct.

I've recreated the backup jobs from scratch. BE is now correctly backing up Shadow Copy components \ User Data \ Distributed File System Replication \ Dfsr Replicated Folders with large full and small incremental backups.

I have also successfully restored from these.
