BE DeDup and OST Target on same server

Created: 31 Jul 2013 | 4 comments

Given that there are limits/restrictions for the BE Dedup, is it the same for OST compatible appliances.

I am looking to purchase some StoreOnce applicances and backing up to NAS targets.

My question: Will we be able to address the StoreOnce NAS targets and a BEDeDup folder hosted from the same server?

Are there any limitations to the number of NAS targets or the size of the NAS targets?

Are there any additional licensing implications?

Thx,

are you planning to backup NAS to HP storeonce appliance ??

HP storeonce appliance are supported with backup exec as OST device

there are no limitations

yes you would need backup exec deduplication license and NDMP option license in order to backup NAS, please check the compatoblity list to confirm if NAS which you want to back is compatible with backup exec.

eg. 2 NDMP option license = 2 NDMP servers

backup exec 2010|2010 R2|2010 R3 : http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH137050

These are all answers that work in my favor...

Yes... We will be backing up NetApp filers via NDMP and since the NDMP stream is not capable of being deduplicated via BEDedup, we are going with appliances for the filers.

How about the last question... Can I host a BEDedup folder and a OST NAS target from the same server?

Backup server will also serve as a replication target for small remote offices... This is why we also want to host the BEDedup but we don't want multiple servers...

Thx for the feedback!

You can add LSU`s/shares from the OST device on the same BE server hosting BEDedup

You already have a license for dedup so you don`t need an additional one for OST as OST technology gets enabled once you add your deduplication license.

Please have a look at this :

there wont be a dedupe folder in your case as you will have to create a lun on HPstoreonce and connect to it using OST plugin provided by HP, hence you would be able to backup data to Hpstoreonce

Please have a look at the article below

Backup Exec OST
OST is a Symantec backup interface that allows intelligent storage devices, like the HP StoreOnce Backup system, to work with Symantec’s Backup Exec software. OST provides Backup Exec administrators with advanced capabilities, such as optimized duplication and DR copy creation.

• HP OST plug-in for Symantec Backup Exec
The HP OST plug-in is installed on the Backup Exec servers/media servers. It uses a StoreOnce Catalyst client-side library interface to interact with the HP StoreOnce Backup systems.

with above configuration you can still have backup exec dedupe folder on backup exec server in addition to OST targets,

hope this answers your question
