BE2012 Deduplication Store 32TB Limit

This issue has been solved. See solution.

So... What happens when a Deduplication Storage device exceeds the 32TB of Deduplicated data?

It cetainly seems to be a few limitations to using this method of Deduplicating without the use of an appliance:

  1. No more that one (1) device per MMS
  2. The 32TB deduplicated data limit per device

Are either of these limitations expected to change.

It will stop backing up is what will happen...  There is a hard-limit built into the product.

Add to that, there are so many performance limitations with the dedupe engine as it is even with just 1-8TB of data, that to get to 16TB or even 32TB, I would cringe at the restore speeds and verify speeds, and taping out (if needed)

For an SMB customer with only a few TB's data, I think it's fine.  Anything else, an OST device is far better suited, or jump to NetBackup.

Also the current limitation of one dedupe store per MMS/Media Server/Media Agent is the same for multiple vendors, not just BackupExec...  So you can't blame the product entirely.

There is an online portal, save yourself the long hold times. Create ticket online, then call in with ticket # in hand :-) http://mysupport.symantec.com "We backup data to restore, we don't backup data just to back it up."
