Best practice to handle the Autoloader
Updated: 21 May 2010 | 1 comment
Hi,
We are using BE 11D with Dell PV124T autoloader. Are there any best practice procedures to follow in general while dealing with the Autoloaders?
Thanks for your inputs.

Absolutely none. It depends
Absolutely none. It depends on what you want to do with it.
This is what I do with our autoloaders (and new MSL2024s):
1. Load the Symantec drivers (latest if possible). Verify this in Windows Device Manager by double-clicking on it, Drivers, and make sure it shows Symantec Corp.
2. In Backup Exec, I partition the autoloader as follows:
2.1 Slots 1 --> 5 = Daily (changed once per week)
2.2 Slots 6 & 7 = Weekly (changed every 2 weeks)
2.3 Slot 8 = Monthly (changed every month)
3. I create a GFS policy (Monthly, Weekly, Daily), and point them to the specific partitions created. This ensures I can keep track of what needs to happen.
Some people put cleaning tapes in specific slots, designating them as such in Backup Exec. I use a cleaning tape when prompted. My thinking is no sense in using up a slot that might only be used every 3 months or so.
All in all, it depends on what your requirements are for your jobs.
Hope this helps.
