  • 1.  Best Practice: PGP E-Mail Proxy, do i need it ?

    Hi,

i use an internal Exchange 2013 Server with an Outlook 2013 Client running at Windows 8.1 ( PGP 10.3.2 ).
I also use several web mail services like outlook.com.

So what i realy dont understand is why do i have to configure an mail proxy ? I just want to encrypt/decrypt messages sent/received
from my mail client. as far as i know, the encryption/decryption takes place on my client computer, so why is it necessary in my
envirement to define an mail proxy ??

In germany it is it more or less MANDATORY to have an encrypted connection to your web mail service, PGP "warns" me that it cant work
because i use encrypted communication to my webmail and i should TURN IT OFF.

so that means i should turn off encrypted mail conversation between my client and the public mailserver ( outlook.com ),
the result would be that every non PGP crypted mail will be send in cleartext ?

this cant be correct i guess ?!?

    Hi SupremeFTW,

Basically, you do not have to manually configure the proxy settings on the SED client.  The Symantec Encryption Desktop (SED) automatically determines your email account settings and creates a PGP Messaging service that proxies the email for that email account. Let me know if you are having issue with automatic account discovery.

You must disable the SSL /TLS settings in your email client otherwise SED does nto proxy your email. But that does not mean that the connection is not encrypted. The SED automatically attempts to upgrade any unprotected connection to SSL /TLS. In other words, SED will take over this task.

For more information, you can read the following KB article:

    Hope it helps.

    Best Regards,

    Bipin
