This issue has been solved. See solution.

Currently we use backupexec (with EV client) to backup our EV server. However I have come to realise recently that we dont actually know how to restore from tape should the server fail. Currently when a vault store closes itself off I copy the flat file structure to HDD. Also There is a daily differential job that runs nightly with a ful at the weekend.

Should the server fail, what would the process be to restore it? We are using EV version 8.0.5.1048. Sorry if this is a bit vauge.

Thanks,

Dan

You need to perform the below:

  1. Ensure that the SQL databases are intact. If not restore the db.
  2. In case the OS on the EV server has crashed, install a new OS with the same hostname or create a DNS alias with the same hostname pointing to the server.
  3. Install the EV binaries
  4. Restore the following components:

    • Vault Store partitions
    • EV Indexes
  5. Run the EV Configuration wizard by specifying the SQL server. The wizard will automatically detect the SQL db and reconfigure EV with the existing directory configuration.

You can refer the Adminstrator's Guide on EV Server's installation directory. Backup and recovery section explains pretty much in details about different types of recoveries and failures.

Hello DPT,

The Administrators Guide contains the disaster recovery processes for Enterprise Vault:

Symantec Enterprise Vault 8.0 Service Pack 4 (SP4) - Administrators Guide
http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH129184 (Page 327)

This guide explains how to recover Enterprise Vault based on the type of recovery process you want to perform:

  • Recovery of Enterprise Vault using full-system backups
  • Recovery of Enterprise Vault using data-only backups
  • Recovery of an Enterprise Vault component
  • Recovery of Enterprise Vault in a VCS cluster
  • Recovery of Enterprise Vault in a Microsoft server cluster

I hope this helps.

The steps by steps guidelines are given in following tech notes in case of EV server failure and you are backuping data regularly.

Recovering an Enterprise Vault server http://www.symantec.com/docs/HOWTO54578

You may wish to validate your backup /recovery procedure on another system.

Recovering an Enterprise Vault server on a different system http://www.symantec.com/docs/HOWTO54579

While recovering you can choose full+last differential backup set.

The thing to remember with whatever path through this aspect of EV that you take, is to practice, practice, practice. Keep testing the processes until they become second nature.

is this method still applicable to EV 9 as well ?

The information given above is most likely same for all current version of enterprise vault, including 9.0.X.

To me it goes without saying ... but in most cases it is imporatnt that you take backups of all the EV conetnt at teh same time and restore all the content at the same time. Partial restores of ... like a directory or VS DB result in data inconsistancies that will cause you issues later.

I hope this helps.

Exactly yes Typo,

especially if not using the supported migrator or the backup application is not supported by EV, then things could go a lot worse, it is so cumbersome to do a restoration in the event of audit when we have to restore both Database and the EV Vault Store at the same time transactionally consistent.
