This issue has been solved. See solution.

I am in the process of replacing our old Altiris Deployment Solution 6.9 SP5 with the new Deployment Slution 7.1.

We need only to deploy software and OS images

No Inventory, Asset Management, reporting, patch (This stuff may be added later but not initially)

I will have a Site Server at 16 remote locations for package deployment and PXE booting

I am taking the Symantec DS Administration class in 2 weeks but I need to know how the base SMP needs to be setup before rolling out the DS

I understand that this must be run in the Symantec Management Platform on an NS but I have a few questions:

1. Do I need to rollout the Symantec Managemanet Agent?

2. What is the minumum configuration I need to do on the SMP to get the DS to run correctly for my needs as listed above?

3. What is the minimum licensing I need? (Do I need SMP licensing AND DS licensing)

I do intend to expand our use of the SMP in the future however our needs right now are only to get a DS up and running quickly.

Thanks for any direction you can provide.

You might want to wait for DS 7.2, in beta at the moment

it has some significant architectural changes.

Otherwise:

  1. The Symantec Management Agent needs to be rolled out to all clients you want to manange with DS and the Deployment Plug-in.
  2. You need to install the Symantec Installation Manager (to the drive you want to install DS to) and select Deployment Soution, this will install the Symantec Management Platform and all the other components you need.
  3. You only need Deployment Solution licences, the Symantec Management Platform itself doesn't need a licence.

Until DS 7.2 comes out you will need to make all your site servers Task Servers, Package Servers and Deployment Site Servers. This includes the Notification Server.

Excellent info!  Precisely

Excellent info!  Precisely what I needed :)

Making the site servers run those site processes is not a problem, it was to be in the design as we are a multi-national company and need to have each location run those services as well as the PXE.

PXE booting will require the

PXE booting will require the same memory as DS 6.9  For DS 7.2 PXE could reside on Windows XP or better without Task or Package servers.
