Best way to backup SQL and files at the same time

This issue has been solved. See solution.

Hi All,

Got the following scenario at a client:

1. VMware solution with multiple VM servers, 1 of which is a Navision server (VMware backups are not needed here though).
2. Stand-alone HP ProLiant DL165 G5 server with an HP StorageWorks 1/8 G2 autoloader connected.
3. Backups running across the local LAN which is a 1GB switch
4. AOFO NOT selected as I am backing up SQL and files at the same time.
5. GFS policy in place with FULL backups.

What I'd like is the following:

1. Backup files with AOFO.
2. Backup SQL to the same tape without AOFO

I've tried to create a duplicate job, but it never seemed to work correctly. This was when backing up Exchange to the same tape. When I logged a call with Symantec a few months ago, the guy couldn't have been more unhelpful and I just canned it.
However, I think it's time to correct my "failing" backups now.
I was thinking that I would create 2 jobs...1 for files etc (with AOFO), and the other for SQL and without...

Anybody want to point me in the right direction?

Laters!

Actually I got a little trouble to understand your problem.

i would go with creating two backup jobs, too. One for files and one for SQL.
What is not working with that?

best regards

Hi Dominik,

My problem is getting the SQL job to back up to the same tape as the files. I'd like it to run afterwards.
When I tried this with Exchange, I couldn't get it right...the job that would back up Exchange never started.
Now I really need to do this with SQL!!!

If both jobs specify the same media set, with the first an overwrite and the second an Append, you should be able to do this with no problems

If this response answers your concern, please mark it as a "solution"

In NetBackup you could do that by setting multiple retention per media. So that 1 tape cartridge could be shared by several backup policy. I believe you can do the something on Backup Exec.

I have never done it, but wouldn't that be possible if you use partions and point the job to the same partition?

just an idea...

Hi,

Ken: Will try your suggestion and see how it goes.

We use partitions in any case so that should be fine to push the jobs to that!

Thanks again!
