The best way to rebuild the master server after it comes down

Created: 02 Jul 2012 | 4 comments

Hi all,

I have 2 sites (one prodution(PS) and the other is DR).in the PS i have 2 media servers and 2 appliances(storage pool).in DR site i have 1 master server and one media server and 2appliances.Ialready configured the SLP ,and configured the catalog backup to go to the appliance in PS then by using AIR duplcate it to the DR site.and the same things from theDR site. The question is: What is the best way to recover catalog to new master server  or to alternate server with the same configurations? (As it mentions in many documents there are many ways to do this) .please advice

note : no master cluster is configured .

The SLP / AIR Best Practices guide says the following:

When writing to tape or VTL catalog backups must be directed to volume pools which have the 'catalog backup‘ attribute set. This attribute is not checked when an SLP is configured for use with a catalog backup policy so you must check the pool attributes are set correctly when you create the storage destinations in the SLP.

If catalog backups are duplicated using SLPs additional steps are required to restore the catalog from a non-primary copy of the catalog backup. More information about this can be found in the NetBackup Troubleshooting Guide and also in TECH125748 (wrong tech given - actually http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH125784)

If catalog backups are duplicated using SLPs both parts of the catalog backup must be duplicated in the same duplication job.

Additional steps are required when recovering catalog backups from disk storage types supported with SLPs. More information about this process can be found in TECH72198 (http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH72198)

Hope these help and give you the ideas you need.

Yo still need to perform catalog backups of each master server locally (to own storage)

If master server is damaged and need to be rebuilt, you can follow the steps in Troubleshooting to rebuild master, reinstall NBU to same path as before, patch to same version as before, then bprecover.

TECH72198 in Mark's post tells you how to recover from disk backup.
