    Hi guys,

I want to try and boot a laptop/desktop off the network and restore images like instead of having to creating a boot disk all the time.

    I went through the boot disk wizard in this step by step;

    1) Selected the WIN-PE type first then next

    2) Then i selected TCP/IP Network boot image

    3) Clicked next through client type and next through the Network Client configuration.

    4) Next through the client address ( setting an IP Address).

    5) didn't add any additional files, so next

    6) The TCP/IP Network boot Image for the Root Directory i just browsed for the same place where the image was stored, I.E, \\server\images\acer4072.

    7) after that just clicked next after looking at the review and let the boot wizard do its thing.

So the wizard is finished and what do i do now to get my laptop/desktop to boot from the network and restore an image?

    Thanks
    James

    James,

Follow these steps to get that going:

How to use the 3Com Boot Services (and SolarWinds TFTP) with Symantec Ghost Solution Suite 2.5 using WinPE

Your step 6 is not correct above; the root directory is always going to be C:\TFTPBOOT. Also note that you will need the 3COM Boot Services and SolarWinds TFTP Server installed.

    Thank you,

    Randy

    Hello Randy,

Well i think i've just realised that i dont have the Server version of Ghost solution suite, i've got standard version which means for the time being i've come to a stand still :( .............. but when you say C:\TFTPBOOT, whats the TFTPBOOT bit for?

I bought 5 standard licence's just to see what the software was like (not thinking that there was a major difference between server and standard), so if i buy 1 server licence will it add upto 6 altogether in the ghost console or would i have to buy another 5 server licences?

    Thanks
    James

    James,

You do not need a server license. The server license is only for installing the client on a server machine to manage that machine via the Ghost Console. It is not necessary for what you are doing.

If you follow that article, it should work. The TFTPBOOT is the default root directory for PXE operations. It is created by default when you install 3COM boot services, the PXE provider. I recommend following the steps in the article.

    Thank you,

    Randy

    Okey dokey,

I've gone through the Instructions and the only thing i know how to do or understand is the Boot Image, i did the Boot Disk Wizard and went through PC DOS because the WIN-PE doesn't make a SYS file............ So how do i make a Boot Image file with the Extension of .IMG???

Can I delete the other hosts in the BOOTPTAB Editor? I've got 5 others there that came pre-done, a Conrad, John, Paul, Steve, Winson. LOL

    Thanks

    Right,

I think i've got past the my problems on the previous post and i'm now trying to boot from the client machine to connect to my ghostcast Session but i keep getting an error which says; ProxyDHCP service did not reply request on to port 4011.

    I've started the PXE server and the 3Com TFTP Server, i must have the right drivers because before it comes up with the error it gives me an I.P address, our SubMask and DNS server I.P and in the Log File it just says this;

    James,

Go to Start > Programs >  3COM Boot Services > PXE Server. Click on the Options menu... is there a check by ProxyDHCP? This is required if the DHCP server is not on the same box. If it is enabled, you might need to verify that DHCP server options 66 and 67 are enabled.

    Thank you,

    Randy

I googled the DHCP server option setting for my server and enabled both 66 and 67 but in the string Value/Data Entry for the 66 (Boot Server Host Name), i put the I.P address of the server. For Option 67 (BootFile Name) i put ARDBP32.bin for the String Value, which is what it said on google but i dont know if thats the right Entry.

    Also for the BOOTPTAB Editor i added a Host as followed;

    Name: Our servername

Node:Servers network card Physical address which i think is the MAC address.

    I.P#: nothing

Image: NetworkBoot.pxe file that i made earlier

It says mentioned about making an boot image which was in a IMG format file but i didn't know how to make one but in the instructions it says to use the PXE file i made before so i did.

    Thanks
    James

I'm really not having any lucky with booting from the network.

I've stopped trying to use the 3com Services nothing seem to work and attempted to use thisDeployCenter, I went through these instructions step by step http://service1.symantec.com/support/on-technology.nsf/854fa02b4f5013678825731a007d06af/e5f5c337ab1999ba882573910082b731?OpenDocument but when it came to Create a VFDboot package which i followed these instructions http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/on-technology.nsf/docid/2006121815121225 .It came upto II. Add Ghost.exe and NIC driver the Virtual Boot Disk file Step 16 and did option B because i didn't understand how to do Option A and i still can't get anything to work same Error "ProxyDHCP service did not reply request on to port 4011".

I've had to install the deploy Center onto a PC in the office that is running Windows XP because it didn't want to install on my server which has Server 2008 R2 or My PC which has Windows 7 Professional, it complained saying "DeployCenter Library cannot be installed on Windows 95, ME or Vista" which i'm not running :P.

    Thanks

    James,

The DeployCenter gave that message when installing on Win7 because it did not recognize the OS (it is not supported for Deploycenter), and when the code was those were the usual suspects. In regard to the other error, are Options 60 & 66 enabled on the DHCP Server? Also, is Proxy DHCP enabled?

    Thank you,

    Randy

    Hi Randy,

I thought i wasnt supported :), yeh i had Enabled Option 60, 66 and 67 on one of our main servers which was running our DCHP and I enabled the proxy DCHP on my Office PC because obviously it doesnt run DCHP, i double checked everything, i just hope i'm not doing anything stupid.................. I think the 3com software is only useless if we have 3com network cards isn't it and we don't have any 3com network cards on any of the machines we have on site or am i just talking S**T haha.

    Thanks
    James

im pretty sure you cant use option 60 with 66 and 67.  If your network is flat (without vlans, single router) you can use option 60.  If you have a segmented network you should get your network guy involved to insert IP helpers into the system and then use option 66 and 67.

for testing i would disable option 66 and 67, use option 60 and test everything on the same network segment.  at least this way you can get your PXE all configured before you start messing with your network config.
