  • 1.  Brightmail 6.2, Quarantine & Reports Not Showing Recipients Properly

    Posted Oct 17, 2010 07:44 AM

    Hi,

We have just installed Brightmail 6.2 and integrated it with Sun Messaging Server 2005Q4 (6.2). Brightmail Servers are running directly on two MTA's that relay inbound mail to an internal mail server, with a single Control Centre.

Suspected Spam is forwarded to the Quarantine and all is well - EXCEPT - The "To" column is showing email addresses in the format @ourdomain.com:username instead of the regular username@ourdomain.com that is expected.

Additionally, the "Top Recipients" report comes up blank. But the "Top Recipient Domains" report shows all of the different email addresses in the format: ourdomain.com:username.

The fields appear correctly in the headers, so I don't know why Brightmail is doing this - any ideas?

By default, Symantec Brightmail Message Filter tracks data for the following reports: Spam Detection and Virus Detection.

Before you can generate other reports, you must configure Symantec Brightmail Message Filter to track and store data appropriate for the report. For example, to generate recipient-based reports such as Spam/Virus: Specific Recipients, you must configure Symantec Brightmail Message Filter to store recipient information.
See “About the report data” on page 286.
To select the data to track
1 In the Control Center, click the Reports tab.
    2 Click Settings.
3 Under Reports Data Storage, select the report data that you want to track.
    4 Click Save.

I figured it out - there is an MTA option called SPAMFILTERX_FINAL that strips the source routed email address before passing it to the filter when set to 2.

The catch is that even though the documentation mentions this should work for Messaging Server 6.0 and above, the stripping option doesn't work until Messaging Server 6.3.
