Hi,
I just inherited this Brightmail 7.7.0-17 and was immediately asked to do an update. There is some information I would like to seek help from you all. Hope you all bear with me.
- Any update procedure available? Any recommendation which to use? GUI or Command Line?
- Backup and restore procedure (in case of problem)
- Link to download Brightmail 7.7.0-17 (to restore back the backup in case of problem)
I have actually tried to search for the above information but was not able to find exactly what I wanted. So, please provide me with the link (if possible) and information to do the update. Appreciate if you are able to let me know anything else I missed out also.
Thanks a lot.

Another question: I found
Another question:
I found this document for the upgrade. How do I know when I run upgrade from command line, which version will it upgrade to?

There is a LOT of changes
There is a LOT of changes from 7.x to 9.5. You don't mention what hardware your 7.7 instance is running on. There might be capacity issues. If you have LDAP enabled, that totally changed in 8.x.
I'd recommend building a VM and testing 9.5 first.
Tell me more about your architecture e.g. # of scanners, control centers, mail volumne, # of local domains, what your backend mail server is. Do you have AD/LDAP?
Not supported, but if you are just "playing" you can get SBG 9.5 running under VMware Player.
Also note that there is one
Also note that there is one mandatory gate between 7.x and the current release - you must upgrade to 8.0.3 in order to see any updates beyond that release. This is due to the communication changes with LDAP that are introduced in the 9.0 release. You will have to do an upgrade from 7.x to 8.0.3 first, and then can upgrade from 8.0.3 to the current release (9.5.1 as of earlier this week).
I have only 1 scanner and
I have only 1 scanner and control center. This is a virtual appliances running on VMWare ESXi. It does not connect/sync to our AD/LDAP.
I was actually thinking to upgrade to 8.0.3 first but however, there is lack of information that I can find to support my upgrade. I need information such as recovery so that I have a backup plan in case anything goes wrong. Else I guess I could just backup the whole VM.
Another question is would I be able to control which version I upgrade to if I am using the command line upgrade as specified on the link below?
http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH88414&locale=en_US
Else another upgrade option is to create new VM with version 9.5.1 but I would require the procedure for me to migrate all the setting from version 7.7.0-17 to 9.5.1 which I think is not possible.
Thanks.
Updates. I think the best way
Updates.
I think the best way to upgrade is to put in a new VM with version 9.5.1 and do the reconfiguration. Can anyone let me know how do I transfer the license to the new brightmail? Anything I need to consider before I transfer the license? Thanks again.
I agree that starting a new
I agree that starting a new instance of 9.5 is best. It really feels like a different product, and the new features may cause you to re-think some of your existing policies/procedures.
So you should get the disk images from fileconnect, build the new VM, and start testing things out.
RE License - you should have a *.slf file that contains the licence. SBG isn't licensed per server, but per # of protected users, so you can have muliple CC, Scanners on the same license.
