Brightmail Gateway actually supports both options:

- on-box (included with the core license), there are a number of pre-defined dictionaries and templates that are based on the described content matching features from Vontu DLP, as well as the Exact Data Matching capability to build policies based on structured data that you import into the Brightmail Gateway environment (as a secure hash table).

- Brightmail Gateway also has optimized integration with a full Vontu DLP deployment, where Brightmail Gateway serves as an MTA for integration of email for Network Prevent functionality as well as an enforcement tool for quarantining, modifying email, or enforcing TLS or encryption.  This would be an additional purchase above and beyond the core Brightmail Gateway license.
