    Posted Jan 19, 2009 08:10 AM

    Hi,

Has anybody installed BrightMail on Virtual PC? I would like to test it in my lab. The installation seemed to be okay but I got the following error message after booting. The BrightMail is 7.7 and the Virtual PC is 2007.

VFS: Cannot open root device "hda2" or unknown-block(0,0)

Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0)

    Could anyone please advice?

    Thanks,

    Nitass

    Hi Nitass,

You can't run the SBG 7.7 Virtual Edition on Virtual PC.  See the installation guide for requirements.

    Hi Kevin,

Thanks. I thought it may be usable on the Virtual PC too. Anyway, VMWare is okay.

    Thanks,

    Nitass

Just to note for testing purposes you can run Virtual Edition on VMware Server, however currently for production Symantec only Support ESX.  With the 8.0 release due at the end of February Symantec plans to Support ESXi for production as well.

    Best Regards,

    Hi

We have Microsoft Virtual Servers running and is currently on SMSMTP. We really like the product, but as it is now end of life we need to move on to SBG. As we see it Symantec Brightmail Gateway will only run on VMWare or as an appliance box.

What about the iso image:  Symantec_Brightmail_Gateway_OSrestore_8.0.3-11_Linux_Int.iso?

We did try to install it on virtual server (that will host Linux) but with different problems - mostly kernel panic - cannot boot from /dev/hda2 (version 8.0.1) or Kernel panic - not syncing: attempted to kill the idle task! (version 8.0.3)

Why is only VMWare supported? - why not just let out a regular Linux iso that will run on "most" hardware? As we have ONLY MS virtual server we are really not to happy with getting VMWare as well.

Not becaus VMWare is not good - but our backup stradegy and hardware is build around MS technology, so please do get a linux distro out that will run on Microsoft Virtual Server.

Looking forward to hear from anybody who wish to share thoughts.

    Best regards Soren

    Hi,

As you have seen, Brightmail Gateway is supported on only the VMWare hypervisor.
There are a number of reasons for this, however of course we are considering other hypervisor options.
We do support ESXi which is a 'free' version of the ESX hypervisor.

    Hi Ian

thank you very much for your reply.

You have a good reason to post the software to a free version of VMWare - but please do be aware that some of your customers use microsoft virtual server or XEN.
I find it strange that you end life on a product that runs on a reguraler windows server and sustitute that product with something that will only be an appliance box or a VMware software.

    Hope to hear from you.

    Best regards Soren.

BE AWARE - You have the best product on the market - do not kill SMSMTP without a goot substitute.
