BUE 2010 services fail to start on clean Windows 2008 R2 Standard server (x64)?

Created: 02 Mar 2010 • Updated: 10 Oct 2013 | 4 comments
This issue has been solved. See solution.

I have a 100% cleanly installed 64-bit Windows 2008 R2 Standard server, fully patched, with MS SQL 2008 Express installed.   I am able to install BUE 2010 but after the installation completes, when I reboot the system it fails in starting the basic services.   Paritcularly the BackUp Exec Server service appear to hang in 'Starting" mode with no messages in the Event Logs stating why.

The server doesn't have any storage devices connected to it, outside of the local disks which is what I was planning on using this server for (disc-to-disc) backups.

Any idea where the incompatibility might be?

Please go to a command prompt, browse to the Backup Exec install path, typically "c:\program files\symantec\backup exec". Please post the results of command "beserver -console" from this prompt. Also, please provide the events logged when service fails to start.

Thanks

Hi Max,

I had an issue on 2 occasions on my upgrades where services didn't start.
After logging a call with Symantec on Monday, I was pointed to the Symantec support site, and downloaded 2 patches for x32 edition, which led to my services starting up.
They were:

http://seer.entsupport.symantec.com/docs/341940.htm

http://seer.entsupport.symantec.com/docs/345850.htm

Download them, and try again...

Craig is right - the patches will fix the issue.  Does Symantec even test this?  Happened on all of my 2008 and 2008 R2 servers - I guess they are "different".

Hi,

Has this helped at all? If so, can you close this off...?
