BUG REPORT: AexSVC fails during start up
I am trying to install Altiris Server Management Suite, but installation always fails with a critical error: "A critical error occured: Failed while stopping service: AeXSvc Configuration failed while attempting: Restarting services..."
I have tracked it down to be an issue, with "Altiris Service" which remains in "Starting" state forever - it does not start and it also can't be stopped gracefully.
I am installing Altiris SMS v7.0.9 using Symantec Installation Manager.
OS is Windows 2003 Server 32-bits; In "Add/Remove programms" I see 3 versions of .NET frameworks - 2.0; 3.0 and 3.5;
In my opinion this issue is not as much related with Installation Manager, but rather with the "Altiris Service" which does not start up on system-boot.
Here is the relevant Log, which is generated, when I try to start "Altiris service" manually from Services:

Same Issue
I'm am having the Identical issue but only installing Altiris Server Management Suite on a windows 2k3 virtual server.
You are going to want to check the following
If .net 3.5 SP1 is installed, it will cause issues, and is not supported. See Altiris KB46492

Installation failed also without .NET SP1(I made fresh WIndows 2003 installation without .NET SP1).
It has to do something with TCP port 50121 which does not have a listening socket. Probably this service does not start up.
I see, that you are quite familiar with CMS, so maybe you could tell which process should own this listening socket? After that, I will try to look why it is not listening in.
Same issue with CMS 7 on a Windows 2003 VM
I am having the same issue with my installation of CMS 7 on a Windows 2003 VM.
I have attempt to reinstall CMS 7 3 times and encountered the same error each time with a different message.
I do not have .Net 3.5 SP1 installed. I have .Net 3.5
Sai, Try installing only the
Sai,
Try installing only the Symantec Management Platform first, then add on CMS/SMS. Also ensure that SIM is up to date; there was an update recently released for it in the last several weeks.

Install the NS7 core first.
I concure with KSchroeder. I have installed both SMS 7 and CMS 7 many times for my clients and I always install the Symantec Management Platform and any of its hot fixes first. I also reboot, if time permits, then run the SIM again and install the chosen suite.
It may also error out during the suite install, but if you just run the install again it will catch the other items it missed.

Am getting this in two seperate installations on two seperate Solutions. In this case i'm installing Service Desk from a offline install package...
Altiris Service either fails to restart or simply start...

I figured this out...just need to ensure a valid Application ID account is used with either local admin rights or Domain Admin rights.
The services restart as required if this is set.
