Bulk move from one group to another

This issue has been solved. See solution.

I need to move a large number of machines from one group to another.  Any recommendations on how best to do this? Right now, I'm using "Search Clients" to find each computer, and moving them one-by-one.  Very tedious (and error-prone).

Running a script to do it would be ideal. Is there a command-line interface for the server?  I've looked in the Admin Guide, and don't see one.

TIA - Paul

yes but...

That is probably better than the approach I'm currently taking, but it still is painful given the number of computers we have.

The problem is: the group we're moving from has over 5000 computers in it.  Finding the computers in the list of 5000 is a herculean task.  I can set my display filter to show 1000 computers at a time and sort by computer name, but get this - when you do a sort, Symantec only sorts the list is currently showing.  It doesn't sort the full list, then show the first 1000, second 1000, etc.   So, if you're looking for a machine named AAAAA, it might be in the first page, but if it isn't, you have to go to the second page, sort, see if it is there, if not, go to the 3rd page, etc.

How r you doing it

Are you seperating these clients based on IP address or OUs
for the first Run sylinkreplacer and give the range of IP address and point ot sylink.xml file of the group to which you want to move ..it will automatically search for computers in this range and replace the sylink on them hence it will move ot that group.

If you are using the 2nd option then the best way would be to do it via AD integration.

The Sylinkreplacer option is

The Sylinkreplacer option is where I was headed also. If you have IP's or hostnames, you can import those into a text file and have the sylinkreplacer use that text file and the sylink.xml file of the new group that you want to drop them into. If you have a very large number of machines to move, you may want to break it up into managable groups because the utility bombs fairly often.

When a client comes back to

When a client comes back to the SEPM, it will take the new settings immediately.  So I would suggest moving the clients from SEPM should work better.

Cheers,

No good solution

So there doesn't appear to be a good way to do this.  :(

I had about 400 computers to move from one group to another, and I needed to do them in several batches.  I was able to do a handful of searches to find most of them, and then could individually find the others.  To avoid having to do this at the time of the actual move, I ended up doing the searches ahead of time, and using the Description field to identify what batch the computer was in.  That was a real pain - pasting the batch number 400 times. It took two hours or so.  But, it paid off in the end - when I had to do the actual move, I could just do a search for the Description, and select all and move them.  The search results for my largest batch was 7 pages long, so I could do all the moves in minutes.

In a month or two, I will need to move about 5000 computers.  Luckily, I should be moving all the machines in a subnet, so I shouldn't have to make 5000 manual entries in the Description field!

Automation scripts

A good while back a Symantec employee did post some scripts that will help with automation using scripts. I tried to find the article but failed. I still have the file that I downloaded, but maybe someone else remembers this post also and can help locate it.
There does appear to be a Moveclient function, this is a small portion of the help file that came with the download:

moveclient
public boolean moveclient(com.sygate.scm.console.logicobject.ClientObject clientobject,
com.sygate.scm.console.logicobject.GroupObject groupobject)Function moveclient() move client in the current domain provided by connect method.

Parameters:
clientobject - client to remove returned by get_client function
groupobject - destination group object
Returns:
true if moveclient is sucessfull
Since:
1.4

This file is under 2MB, so if you want I could email it to you if you were to PM me.
