Can the Symantec Mail Security banner be changed so that it wouldn't say "Symantec Mail Security"?

I like the banner to be generic so that the spammers and hackers wouldn't know what they are dealing with.

For SMS SMTP, you can easily change it like any other IIS SMTP banner, via adsutil.vbs. For the appliance, you should be able to edit it like any postfix: add the smtp_banner parameter to main.cf. I haven't tried it, though. I'll try it now and report back.

The SMTP banner can be changed via hidden advanced settings in both the Appliance and SMTP5 without having to make config file changes.

I would post how but I would suggest calling into the queue to get the information on how to do this as there is a reason that these settings are hidden. I'm sorry if that's an inconvenience, but this is one of those "look but don't touch" type of areas that Symantec likes to give direction on verbally.

    Thanks!

You can change the hostname in the banner via advanced settings, but you cannot change the rest of the banner via available GUI. A "hidden" setting in the GUI -- for real? If that's true, that's plain silly since Symantec uses IIS or postfix for SMTP, it's not like it's anything proprietary. I'll open a case.

A lot of it is actually the inner workings of the program as well that can drastically, (and sometimes detrimentally) change the functioning of the program.

Why the banner was put into these advanced settings... your guess is as good as mine.

Ok, I opened a case with support. In the meantime, I figured out how to do it manually. You can't edit the main.cf file because SMS overwrites it on startup. The file to edit is: /data/mta/etc/mtaconfig.xml , look for the <smtpGreeting> variable. I'm still curious as to their hidden GUI method, so I'll follow that up as well. I'll post back anything not redacted.

Got a quick response from Symantec support. As Tom wrote (not that I doubted him), there is a super secret advanced settings GUI and you will have to contact support for the info. I'd certainly advise this over editing the xml file directly. Always best to use the supported methods when possible. Enjoy!
