This issue has been solved. See solution.

We are facing some media outage where we can see that there is some free space in inserted tapes.

Explanation:

Can any one give us guidance whether can we use media alloted to 1 media server by another media server.

We have 4 drives Ultrium 3 tape library used by 9 media servers and Master server. Backup happens through SAN media.

What happens is always we used to keep tapes on TB count, and happens media will be free for 30 to 50% where other media servers fails backup with NBU error code 96.

UNSTRESTICTED_MEDIA_SHARING

UNRESTRICTED_MEDIA_SHARING is what you are looking for. Is a new feature in 6.5 but is set to default off. Media already assigned need to be in scratch status before UNRESTRICTED_MEDIA_SHARING takes affect.

Yo set media sharing by going to : Host Properties - Master server - Media - Tick "Enable media sharing for all media servers"

Scratch

A tape is in scratch status, when it has no images (backups) assigned to it. If you go to the media section in the GUI, find the coloum called  "Media owner",   you should see tapes being owned by  "UNRESTRICTED_SHARING_GROUP" with the next few weeks.
