Can I install BE 12.5 on Windows XP Pro SP3???

This issue has been solved. See solution.

We have recently purchased an RD1000 removable hard drive back up system for one of our clients. With this device we were provided with a copy of Backup Exec 12.5 quickstart edition. These particular clients only have a few computers and do not have a server in place. They are wanting to centralize all their backups so we were going to try installing the BE on a new Windows XP machine that they have.

I have run the installer and everything appears to install fine without error, however, when you try to launch the backup exec application we get a windows error stating they Backup Exec UI has encountered and error and needs to close. After this point the program will never load.

I am hoping to find a little insight and perhaps some help to try and get this up and running. A few questions:

1. Can BE 12.5 be installed as the media server on a windows XP SP3 box.

2. If so, what could be causing the UI errors. We are fully up to date on windows updates.

3. Some people I have talked to seem to think we could 'downgrade' to BE 12.0 and it may work. Is this a possible option?

I appreciate any and all help in trying to figure this out.

You can install 12.5 on a Win XP SP 3 machine.

Try runnig a repair of the installation of BEWS and repair the .NET  framework too.

There seems to be conflicting information out there (assuming SP2 not SP3, but this probably will not be a show-stopper):

According to these system requirements, this will not work, but I am not sure I believe this one over the ones below: http://www.symantec.com/business/products/sysreq.jsp?pcid=pcat_storage&pvid=57_1

But according to this, XP is supported in 12.5: ftp://exftpp.symantec.com/pub/support/products/Backup_Exec_for_WindowsNT/307063.pdf

http://seer.entsupport.symantec.com/docs/270139.htm

According to this, XP is also supported in version 12: ftp://exftpp.symantec.com/pub/support/products/Backup_Exec_for_WindowsNT/295304.pdf

This specifically says the Quick Start Edition can run on XP: http://seer.entsupport.symantec.com/docs/304894.htm

I would also look at the following article then possibly repair your installtion if you did not do this the first time: http://seer.entsupport.symantec.com/docs/241419.htm

Also note the BE account can't have a blank password.

I tend to think it will work based on the articles I have seen. If the prerequisite check said it was OK, then your problem is not compatibility.

Thanks for the help guys. I removed both backup exec and the .NET framework 2.0. After reinstalling both everything is up and running fine with no issues that I can tell as of yet.

Thanks again!
