  • 1.  Can a pc's or devices Asset Tag be Changed using Altiris?

    Posted Jan 13, 2011 06:15 AM

    Hi,

I'm a new user to the Altiris Console (version no: 6.0.6074 SP3 +R11) and i'm currently creating reports and have discovered that Asset Tags can be detected.

However I would like the Asset Tag to represent the unique Tag which we have attached to our devices (for Call logging Purposes and ease of identification). Is it possible to change the one stored in the BIOS using Altiris to say for example 123456-ST001 or would this need done manually at the workstation?

    Any help appreciated!

    Regards,

    Gary

I don't think it's possible or recommended to modify the asset tag field in the BIOS.  That's usually entered by the manufacturer of the hardware or of the computer.

What if you created a custom data class and then populated it automatically (if there's already something on the computer identifying it as Asset 123456-ST001) or manually?  You could call the custom data class 'Company XYZ Asset Tag' and easily clone and modify reports that use Asset Tag now.

You could use the connector solution to import the custom asset tags in place.  You will have to turn off the inventory to asset sync task.

What I currently have is a list of Asset registers for the pc's which contains the Asset Tag numbers (eg 123456-st001 etc) which are in Excel format.

Is it easy to create a Custom Data Class? As i'm new to Altiris Client Management Suite 1 i'm still trying to get my head around loads of it.

    Thanks for the update.

Is the connector solution available on Altiris Client Management Suite 1 (version no 6.0.6074 SP3 +R11)?

Without Asset Management Suite, you must use a custom inventory.  A similar discussion is happening here:

    https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/forums/lenovos-asset-tag-bios

I'd recommend reviewing these KBs to learn more about creating custom data classes and then populating them:

    NS7: http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=HOWTO10487

    NS6 article: https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/articles/readycustom-inventory-pulling-values-registry

The custom inventory looks on the computer itself for the data it needs to populate the custom data class you created.  If you want to do manual input from your desk for all computers, and especially if you want to import from a .csv, you must purchase Asset Management Suite.

Hi.Altiris only reports on the data in the BIOS via (custom) inventory.

To actually change the information that is recorded in the BIOS, you would need to use the manufacturers utilities.

On Dell machines, this used to be ASSET.COM. In newer Dell & HP machines, you can update this manually in the BIOS.

What hardware are you using? Try and read the manuals for the PC.

    Hope this helps.

    Hi Gary.

Have a look at this discussion. They are trying to achieve the same thing:  https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/forums/lenovos-asset-tag-bios
