  • 1.  Can Shared Insight Cache (SIC) be installed to Group Update Provider (GUP) Server?

    Posted Nov 28, 2014 04:58 AM

    Question:

    1. Can SIC be installed on GUP server and operate?

    2. If #1 is yes, what will be the minimum specification for the server (SIC + GUP) be?

    3. If #1 is yes, how many client can a SIC + GUP server can support? (I know it depends on the specification, so please give specification and the client size)

    Additonal Info:

I did little searching about SIC and saw postings about how SIC can use a lot of network (around 25M to 40M) and I think a "yes" to the first question, but did not find the information to the #2 and #3 of the question.

Doing a test before the deployment to 8k employers (size may increase).

It would greatly appreciate it if anyone can share infos!

    Regards.

Yea it can be done but I would make sure you have plenty of RAM and good specs across the board for this machine since it will be serving multi-purposes now. At least 4GB of RAM

    Hi,

    1. Can SIC be installed on GUP server and operate?

--> If GUP is installed on Server operating systems then SIC can be installed on the same, pre-requisite are important to know.

    Pre - Requisite for SIC:

    Install .net Framework 4.0.

    Windows 2003/2008.

    2. If #1 is yes, what will be the minimum specification for the server (SIC + GUP) be?

--> Actually SIC and GUP are two different components and if they are meeting with their minium requirements then it will work without any issue.

    SIC System Requirements Description

Software system requirements consist of the following:

    • Windows Server 2003/2008
    • NET Framework 4

CPU size : : Shared Insight Cache must be installed on a dedicated server or virtual machine.
    Memory: 2 GB minimum
Available disk size: 100 MB minimum

Refer this article to know more info: Symantec Endpoint Protection Shared Insight Cache User Guide 12.1

    http://www.symantec.com/docs/DOC4334

    GUP System requirements:

You should refer this article: Best Practices with Symantec Endpoint Protection Group Update Providers

    http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH93813

    3. If #1 is yes, how many client can a SIC + GUP server can support? (I know it depends on the specification, so please give specification and the client size)

--> I believe there is not any limitation for SIC however single GUP can support upto 10,000 clients. Out of 8K how many virtual machines are there? SIC is specifically designed to improve virtual machine scan performance.

I would suggest to use two different machines if possible because if that machine goes down then you may loose two services at a time.
