Can Symantec mail security temp files be deleted?

Created: 22 Jan 2013 • Updated: 29 Jan 2013 | 5 comments
This issue has been solved. See solution.

Hi All,

recently I realise my server got alot of .tmp files generated by mail security. It can be located in

C:\<mail security folder>\Server\temp

I was wondering if it can be removed as it already took out 52GB of the space.

Hello Shangwsh,

The files you see in the \Server\temp folder can, indeed, be deleted, however, there are some steps you should take in this process.

Before deleting these files, you should make a copy of your settings just in case something goes wrong. The next step is to stop the SMSMSE services. Delete the files. Restart the services.

I am a little concerned in that this file should never be that size, it's purpose is a "holding place" for the files/messages currently being scanned.

Once you delete these files, please keep an eye on this folder. If it continues to build in size again, I would love to have you open a support case (www.mysupport.symantec.com) so I can take a look at your server. This could be a much deeper issue than files simply taking up space.

Thank you for asking and good luck.

Hi,

I'm ok to open up a case. But will the case be handle by you? Usually the support for my region is handle by the India side.

Hi Sangwsh,

It depends on the time that you open the support case and your home region. Mail Security support is based in the United States, Sydney and Green Park, UK. When you open the case, whatever region is currently during business hours is who will handle your case. When you open the case, you can actually ask for the case to be handled by a specific region and it will be assigned to that region to work on. Whenever you open a support case, that is your call. Just ask and we will help you however we can :)
