Cannot get Ghost to create an image...
I just purchased the Ghost Solutions Suite, a bunch of licenses. It is version 2.5, build 2266. I've been reading through the forum and see some discussions about this build having some issues, but it is the only build that was available for me to download. I've printed the manuals out, and have been working through them. I've set things up according to the instructions. I have Dell Latitude D630 that I am using as my source computer, formatted with Windows XP, SP3. It has all Windows updates applied and has our core software installed upon it - MS Office, Symantec Endpoint Security, the Adobe PDF reader, the VPN client, etc.
I've set up the image definition, and then the image task, and tried it many different ways. I've tried creating the image using Hot Imaging; then without Hot Imaging; then tried it with creating the image on the client computer, instead of creating it where I want it, which is on the server. All fail.
The error log is essentially useless as it provides no details that help.
When I try running the task and have it saving the image on the server, I usually get a message that says that the clone failed. When I get more details, I see a coupel of steps that succeeded, then it always ends with the step Clone showing a status of Failed. When I click on it I get:
Details for: Clone
Clone failed and could not open the ghosterr.txt file for retrieval.
If I try running the task to have it save the image to the client computer, I get:
Details for: Clone
To view ghosterr.txt file select "Error File" from the "View" menu in the event log.
Clone failed. The ghosterr.txt file wes retrieved successfully.
When I go into View, Task log, and open the log for the task that I set up to save the image on the client computer, it just shows me the same information; no details. I want to know WHY it is failing and WHAT to do to make it work.
I've spent quite a bit of time on this, and I really need to get this going. Where can I get further assistance on making this work?
Thanks.

drivers
Dennis,
Try adding these Windows Vista 32bit drivers:

Here is why I advised Vista drivers when you are deploying Windows XP:

I assume that I should add
I assume that I should add the drivers to the client computer that I want to image? Will I have to add these drivers to every computer that I want to take an image of moving forward?
I will take a look. By the way, in the Machine Groups section, I set this compuetr up and when I did so, I used the WinPE-512 selection as the Virtual Partition PreOS. Is this OK, or should I use WinPE?
Thanks for the information. I'll see how it all works out.
WinPE
Dennis,
You do not need to add drivers to the client machines; just the boot wizard. And the WinPE or the WinPE-512 are both okay.... just make sure you add the drivers to the appropriate build of WinPE.
Thank you,
Randy
I'm trying to follow the
I'm trying to follow the instructions in the link under "How to add drivers to DeployAnywhere or WinPE". OK, I select Win PE. There is a checkbox for "Include Deploy Anywhere Driver Database with the image". Should this box be checked?
I ultimately hope to be able to image computers and then deploy images to new computers from the Ghost console.
In just reading the article in the link, there are notes that I am not sure about - exactly what they mean, or more importantly, if they are anything that concerns me and what I am trying to accomplish.
First off, the drivers that you are suggesting - are they NIC or mass storage drivers?
Am I supposed to do both sections - adding the drivers to WinPE (or in my case, I assume WinPE 512) and then also do the section for adding drivers to DeployAnywhere using the Ghost console?
It isn't all totally clear, perhaps because I am new to the whole Ghost product. The implementation manual alone is what, 973 pages? I've been reading as much iof it as I can. but no matter what I try, I seem to be lacking key pieces of information.
Thanks.
I have downloaded the files
I have downloaded the files that you suggested and unzipped them. Unfortunately, my confusion is only increasing. Reading the articles in the links is basically adding to my confusion, rather than clarifying things.
First off, the zip files intel_ich9 and intel_ich10 appear to contain exactly the same files. Same file names, file sizes, file dates and file times on them. I can send you screen shots showing this if it would help. So should I still install both of them? I understand these drivers to be storage drivers. The articles mention version 8, 7 and 5; I assume that the new ones take the place of this.
I downloaded the Intel PROWin32.exe file, which is where I ended up after following the trail from your Intel 82567 link. I had thought that clicking the .exe file would maybe extract the drivers, but instead it looks liek it wants to install the drivers on my computer, and I don't want that. I'll try to figure it out.
driver extraction
Dennis,
Yes, add both of them. These are the most current drivers and should boith be added to the storage drivers tab in the boot wizard.
As for the ProWin32.exe, it is a self-installing archive file. Use WinZIp/WinRAR/7Zip to extract it. Just open up your ZIP utility, go to File > Open, then changes the "Files of type" drop-down to "All files". Then you can extract it like a standard *.ZIP file. Add that to the network drivers tab.
Thank you,
Randy
I am sorry to keep asking
I am sorry to keep asking questions on this issue, but I need to be clear, and I know that I can use the product more effectively if I understand why things are done.
First off, just curious, since the Dell notebook uses a Broadcom NetXtreme 57xx Ethernet cards, the Intel network drivers still should be installed? The wireless adapter in the notebook is an Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG.
In the PROwin32 extraction, which set of drivers should I use? There are 3 to choose from - PRO100, PRO1000 and PROXGB.
Under the PRO1000, which I am guessing is the correct one, then under Win32, I have NDIS5x, NDIS61, and NDIS62. Use NDIS62?
Can you also very briefly explain why the Intel storage drivers version 9 and also version 10 have to be added? Version 10 alone isn't sufficient?
Many thanks for your assistance, I mean it.
I added the drivers. When I
I added the drivers. When I select the client machine, then Properties, then Client, I can select the new custom WinPE-512 client. Do I need to change the template under the "Network Settings when using Virtual Partition"? It comes up with the suggested template of "Broadcom BCM57xx" which I believe matches the network card in the Dell Latitude that I am tryign to image. Or do I need to select something different?
I redeployed the client to
I redeployed the client to the notebook that I am trying to image, making sure that it was using the new WinPE-512 with the added drivers. It failed the same way. I was trying to create the image on the server, instead of locally. This is taking a great deal of time and I am getting nowhere.
I really don't want to call tech support. I have had to to that several times in the last month, for Backup Exec and for Endpoint. In every case there was a 30-minute (approx) wait until someone came on to take my name and give me a case number, then another 30 - 40 minute wait until someone in India picks up. Then sometimes they transfer me, entailing another 30+ minute wait. I have no problem with getting help form people in India; they have actually been quite helpful. What I can't deal with are the VERY long delays. I even got disconnected on one of the calls, after waiting for over an hour. The phone flew across the room when that happened and I had to get a new phone. I honestly don't have an hour to sit on hold to try to get this resolved, and I do need it resolved quickly. How can I get assistance with this? The product is simply and clearly not working when I follow the instructions provided.
I ahve also been trubg to get the license file added to the software, but when I follow those instructions, what I get does not match what the manual says that I get. There is no Browse botton, no way to locate a file, no "OK". button. I submitted a separate ticket for that yesterday and have heard nothign back yet.
If I can't get this working shortly, I'll just return it all for a refund and find another product. I will likely do that on our security software when it is time to renew, not because it is bad software, but because reaching tech support is so incredilbly difficult. It's a shame, I like Symantec products, but I just cannot and will not deal with hour-long waits to speak to a tech support person.
I have been going back
I have been going back through the Boot Image screen. Do I need to continue through the wizard to create a new boot image? I am just trying to create whatever I need to create to image the Dell computer, and I am following the instructions in the manual and on the web page that you sent me a link for. Neither discusses anything on the Boot Wizard screens after editing the WinPE-512 image to add the drivers, and I would have no idea which of the 4 selections I need to take in any event. This just isn't clear. What I am trying to do is to image computers via the console and save the images on the server's drive, and then later will deploy the images to new computers, through the console. Ok, given this, which of the 4 options should I be selecting? Standard Ghost Boot Disk, Console Boot Partition, TCP/IP Network Boot Image, or TCP/IP Network Ghost Client Boot Image? And why is this not discussed in the manual, or in the instructions in the link that you sent me?
Thanks.
Broadcom
Dennis,
I'm sorry, you do need the driver for the Broadcom card. Here is the link:
http://www.broadcom.com/support/ethernet_nic/driver-sla.php?driver=570x-Vista-32
As before, add this as a Vista driver.
Thank you,
Randy
I have downloaded the
I have downloaded the Broadcom driver and am adding it to the custom WinPE-512 file. I still need a few questions answered.
Once I have added it to the custom WinPE-512 image, do I then cancel out, or do I need to hit "Next" and then select one of the 4 options, as I asked earlier? If so, which option applies to what I am trying to do? Standard Ghost Boot Disk, Console Boot Partition, TCP/IP Network Boot Image, or TCP/IP Network Ghost Client Boot Image? The last two refer to 3com drivers and I am not using 3com cards, so they wouldn't apply.. correct?
I have read through the docs on Ghost boot images. All of the docs, all the way through, are fine for telling you HOW to make a selection, but nothing is really helping me understand WHICH selection to make, in many cases. I know that it depends upon twhat I am trying to do. My initial project I thought would be simple - build a Latitude D630 with the basic drivers and standard software, in Windows XP, and create an image of the disk, through the Ghost console, and save the image on the server. Step 2 would be deploying the image to a different computer, but I am stuck on step 1 - I have not yet been able to create an image, it fails every time. I am following the instructions in the manual. I have watched the tutorial video from the Symantec site (although it, too, just tells you how to make selections, but not really what to select to do what I am trying to do...)
Again, any guidance is appreciated. Thanks.
boot disk
Dennis,
After adding the driver, go through the boot wizard and choose the Standard Ghost Boot Disk. The ones that refer to 3COM are for PXE setups using 3COM Boot Services, so ignore them. Since you are Ghostcasting, ignore the Client Settings page, since you do not need to map a drive. On the ip addressing page, DHCP is preferred if that is an option. After that, choose the type of media (CD, etc.) and accept defaults. Here is a good article:
How to get started in Ghost Solution Suite 2.5 with Boot Disks and the Ghostcast Server

I have installed the new
I have installed the new Broadcom driver into the custom WinPE-512. I named it "Broadcom_Dell". When I go into Machine Groups and select Properties for the computer that I am trying to image, under Client, for the Network Settings, it comes up with Broadcom BCM57xx as the suggested driver. The network card in the Latitude is a Broadcom NetXtreme 57xx Gigabit Controller.
OK, I click "Use Manually Selected Template" and browse, since I assume that I am supposed to be looking for the driver that I added. I have 5 Broadcom drivers to select from
Broadcom 440x
Broadcom BCM4401
Broadcom BCM57xx
Broadcom NetXtreme Family v6.34
Broadcom NetXtreme Family v6.46
The driver version on the Broadcom in the Latitude, according to Device Manager, is version 10.26.
Why is the driver that I added not in the list to select from? Am I in fact supposed to be selecting the driver that I added? I am really confused, and can't find anything to explain this whoel thing well enough to get me past the problem.
I did verify that the Broadcom_Dell driver was selected to be built into the custom WinPE image.
Help... I have got to get this working.
If I call Tech Support on
If I call Tech Support on this issue and spend the hour+ that it always takes to get through to a technician, will they be likely to be able to get this workign for me?
I'm looking through the
I'm looking through the article that you suggested. It discusses creating a boot disk (USB key), then booting the source computer from the boot disk. I have been trying to do everything through the Ghost console, which the installation manual guides us through doing. Should I not be using the console for this? Again, I must be missing something here. According to the manual, I should be able to install a remote client on the source computer, create a task to image the computer from the console, and it should create an image of the source computer and store the image on the server. It doesn't mention anything about needing to create a boot disk and boot from the boot disk as a part of this process, yet the article that you guided me to discusses creating a boot disk and running the imaging from the USB key. OK, what am I missing here? How do these two pieces intertwine, why is booting from the USB key necessary if I am trying to run everything through the console, and why does the documentation omit this fact?
Thanks
Installing the live version
Installing the live version appears to have made the difference. I can't believe how much time I lost. I have the e-maill from the company's Symantec Expert - a corporate MSS or some such, where I specifically asked if I could use the trial version and just enter the license key to make is a live version, and her answer was "yes".
Thank you again for your assistance.
