Cannot Install Endpoint Client on Endpoint Management Server

  • 1.  Cannot Install Endpoint Client on Endpoint Management Server

    Posted May 13, 2010 12:00 PM
I have a Windows Server 2003 R2 SP2 that I am using as my Endpoint Manager.  I installed Endpoint Manager and deployed the client to 200 workstations; everything went perfectly.  Now I am starting on the servers.  So I decided to install the client on the management server first.  However, the installation keeps failing:  I've tried using the deployment method, installing a local (unmanaged) client, etc.  When using the push deployment method, it appears to work, but the client is never installed.  When I try to install from the CD, I get an error that there are "pending changes" that require a restart.  So I restart the system and try again, but then I get the message that the installation was "interrupted" during the install.

Does anyone have any idea what is happening?  Thanks.

    Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\PendingFileRename operartions

and rename the key to PendingFileRenameOperations2

    and then run the install

Thanks for the quick reply, but there is no key named "PendingFileRename Operations"; there is, however, a key named "FileRenameOperations".  Is that the one you are referring to?

    Let me know.  Thanks.

Suggestions given by Prachand should work other than that here is a article for the issue that you have

Title: 'Symantec Endpoint Protection (SEP) 11 client installation fails with the message "Pending system changes that require a reboot have been detected"'
    Web URL: http://service1.symantec.com/support/ent-security.nsf/docid/2007121609023348?Open&seg=ent

That's strange it should be PendingFileRenameOperations

    are you checking at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SessionManager

    Prachand,

Thanks again, but I am only getting this error when I try to install from CD; I would much rather use the Deployment tool to install it.  Is it because the Endpoint Manager is on this same server?

Also, I still can't find this key you are talking about:  it's not there.

    Thanks.

Not an issue, Please go to run and type %temp%  and then look for SEP_inst.log

In the log file serach for return value 3 and paste 6-7 before that

I found several instances of "Return value 3"; should I change them all?

Also, you say to paste 6-7 before that:  Does that mean it should look like this:  "Return value 6-73"?

    Let me know.  Thanks.

    Prachand,

I did find the key (it was right where you said it was) and made the change you suggested, but I am still having the same issue.

Any other ideas?  This is getting frustrating!  Thanks.

Copy the 10 lines above the first Return value 3
and paste it over here for us to analyse

Did you have SSC on this server earlier?
If yes then download and install windows installer cleanup utility from
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301

then using it remove AMS 10.0.0.0

As per the Log have you tried rebooting the server then running the install ?

    Also
    Delete
    C:\Program Files\Symantec\Liveupdate
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\LiveUpdate

then reboot your server then install SEP.

Yes, I have rebooted several times and tried to reinstall several times.

Is that a good idea to delete the LiveUpdate folders?  Because I have Endpoint Protection Manager installed on this machine?

Yes you can delete that because once SEP is installed you can register SEPM with Liveupdate

Ok, it looks like that did it!  Where's my Staples "Easy" button?

Thanks to both of you for your help.
