Cannot Launch Console
Updated: 22 May 2010 | 6 comments
This issue has been solved. See solution.
I have a strange error which came up in my Altiris environment today. When I try to launch the console, I get an error which says "ConnectionWrite (send()). General network error. Check your network documentation."
I have confirmed that the database server which Altiris is trying to communicate with is functioning properly and that the network between the deployment console and database server is active. I'm at a bit of a loss as this error isn't very verbose and really have no idea where to start troubleshooting. Anyone have any thoughts?

A quick search on google returned the below link. You might check that out to see if any of the suggestions help you out. I personally have not had this issue, but can understand how frustrating it might be, especially when there really isn't any detailed errors that jump out at you.

I'm turning into the KB guy..
But give this a try, though it's obscure and it doesn't seem to match your situation, it does include your error message.

Searching for just 'General network error. Check your network documentation' returns this result, though I know your error was DS and this is NS:
Errors in the Notification Server logs show "General network error"
https://kb.altiris.com/article.asp?article=37542&p=1
Which refers to this particular Microsoft KB:
"Error message when an application connects to SQL Server on a server that is running Windows Server 2003: "General Network error," "Communication link failure," or "A transport-level error"
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/942861
kb.altiris.com has other results for 'General network error. Check your network documentation,' but they seemed old and obscure (SQL 2000, etc).
Does any of this help?

I sorted this out last
I sorted this out last night, but yes, the issue is similar to the one reported in MS KB 942861 - except that instead of disabling TCP Chimney in the registry, as the server had an HP network device, I went into the HP network control panel and under options chose "TCP Offload Engine" and set it to disabled.
Thanks for the suggestions.
Hi guys, I have also this
Hi guys,
I have also this error in event viewer. "Database Error: ConnectionWrite (send())." And the console hangs sometimes. And Altiris is not funcitioning very well after a view days sometimes.
But the difference is, im not connecting to the SQL server via the network. The Altiris DS and SQL server run on the same Server 2003 system.
Any suggestions please?
Thank you.
Nikolai
